 A harcok fokozódtak Afganisztánban, az utolsó amerikai és NATO-csapatok kivonulásával a háború sújtotta országból. Az elmúlt hónapokban a tálibok tucatnyi támadtak meg, és több stratégiai határátkelőt is elfoglaltak.
   
 Deborah Lyons, az ENSZ afganisztáni különleges képviselője sajnálatosnak nevezte a támadást, és elmondta, hogy az ENSZ kapcsolatba lépett a konfliktus mindkét felével azért, hogy kiderítse, ki és miért támadta meg az irodát.
 „A támadás elkövetőit azonosítani kell, és felelősségre kell vonni őket” – mondta. „Az ENSZ igyekszik sürgősen teljes képet alkotni a támadásról, és ezért kapcsolatba lép az érintett felekkel.”
 Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a tálibok szóvivője közleményt adott ki, miszerint az ENSZ irodája kereszttűzbe került, de az iroda biztonságos, és nem kell aggódniuk.
 Afganisztán Független Emberi Jogi Bizottságának elnöke, Shaharzad Akbar közösségi oldalán azt írta, hogy az ENSZ elleni támadások háborús bűncselekményeknek minősülhetnek.
 „A híreket olvasva fáj a szívem” – tweetelte. „Gondoljunk mindenkire, aki félelemben él jelenleg Afganisztánban. Minden családra, aki nem tudja a holnapot tervezni. Az összes terrorizált gyerekre. Mit hozott nekünk a háború, csak a nyomort, a szenvedést, a bizonytalanságot és a függőséget?”
 Washingtonban Jake Sullivan nemzetbiztonsági tanácsadó és Jalina Porter, a külügyminisztérium helyettes szóvivője elítélte az ENSZ elleni, Heratban elkövetett halálos támadást.
