Зимовий шторм „Ферн” у США забрав перші життя — у Нью-Йорку знайшли тіла трьох людей, які загинули через мороз. Надзвичайний стан оголосили 18 штатів, з наслідками негоди можуть зіткнутися вже понад 220 мільйонів американців.

Шторм „Ферн” почався вранці суботи 24 січня: він приніс рекордно низькі температури та найбільші за понад століття снігопади в багатьох американських містах.
У Нью-Йорку шторм забрав перші життя. Тіло 67-річного чоловіка знайшли на тротуарі на Манхеттені. За дві години в Брукліні виявили ще двох загиблих — чоловіка віком близько 30 років та жінку віком 60 років. За даними NBC News New York, усі троє загинули через погодні умови.
Надзвичайний стан оголосили в 18 штатах переважно на півдні та сході країни, зокрема в Техасі, Луїзіані, Міссісіпі, Алабамі, Джорджії, обох Каролінах, Міссурі, Теннессі, Вірджинії, Меріленді та Пенсільванії.

Авіакомпанії скасували понад 10 тисяч рейсів і закликали пасажирів перенести поїздки. Близько 135 тисяч домогосподарств залишилися без електрики — найбільше в Техасі, де знеструмлено понад 50 тисяч.
Через шторм призупинили громадський транспорт. У Нью-Джерсі автобуси та легкорейкові поїзди зупиняться в ніч перед неділею. В техаському Остіні громадський транспорт припинив роботу ще в суботу о 16:00. Для ліквідації наслідків задіяли сотні бійців Національної гвардії з 12 штатів.
