A vadon élő állatok védelmével foglalkozó kormányhivatal közleménye szerint a tragédia déltájban történt, a már élettelen férfi testét egy rutinellenőrzés alkalmával vették észre. A holttest kiemelése idejére a kifutóban élő négytagú oroszláncsaládot átmenetileg kiköltöztették. A hatóságok megnyugtatták a lakosságot, hogy az incidens során egyetlen oroszlán sem szabadult ki a főváros Achimota Forest nevű elővárosában lévő állatkertből.
A rendőrség vizsgálatot indított. Egyelőre nem tudni, hogy a középkorú férfi miért mászott át a biztonsági korláton.

Megerősítette a halálos Marburg-vírus első két esetét Ghána. A Marburg-vírus az ebolát okozó vírus családjába tartozó, rendkívül fertőző betegség.
A halálos és gyógyíthatatlan betegséget ezt megelőzően Tanzánia déli részén tapasztalták, ott 13-an fertőződtek meg. Most Ghánából jelentették, hogy mindkét beteg a közelmúltban halt meg a déli Ashanti régióban lévő kórházban a Marburg vírus, vagyis vérzéses láz okozta fertőzésben.

Helyi sajtóértesülések szerint a szerencsétlenség a Bogoso és Bawdie bányásztelepülések közötti Apiate kisvárosában történt. A beszámolók szerint a robbanás oka az lehetett, hogy a torontói székhelyű Kinross vállalat tulajdonában lévő Chirano aranybányához tartó, robbanószerrel megpakolt teherautó összeütközött egy motorkerékpárral.
A sajtóorgánumokban megjelent, de hivatalosan még meg nem erősített felvételek a robbanás kiterjedt, füstölgő térségét mutatták, hatalmas pusztítás nyomaival. Egy tisztségviselő legalább tíz halottról számolt be.
Az egyik helyi tanácstag által megosztott felvételek pedig egy mély krátert mutattak, amelynek széleiről emberek bámészkodtak a mélybe.
Seji Saji Amedonu, az országos katasztrófavédelmi hivatal helyettes vezetője szerint ötszáz épület semmisült meg.
Nana Akufo-Addo elnök mikroblogján részvétét nyilvánította a szerencsétlenségben életüket vesztett emberek hozzátartozóinak.
A rendőrség közlése szerint a közeli települések vezetéseit felkérték, hogy a túlélők számára biztosítsanak szálláshelyet közlétesítményekben, így iskolákban és templomokban.
