A tüzet a ház tulajdonosai jelentették be.
 Mint kiderült, a tulajdonos töltőn hagyott egy akkumulátort. Amikor éjszaka hazaért, füstszagot érzett, és amikor kinyitotta a garázst, lángok csaptak ki onnan. A férfi azonnal felébresztette a fiát és értesítette a tűzoltókat. Kiérkezésükig megpróbálták saját eszközökkel megfékezni a tüzet.
 
 A helyszínre Beregszász és Nagydobrony állami tűzoltó- és mentőegységei vonultak ki. A tűzoltók nyílt lángokat és sűrű füstöt találtak a garázsban, ezért légzésvédő felszerelésben dolgoztak.
 A tüzet 30 négyzetméteres területen sikerült lokalizálni, majd teljesen eloltani. A lángok megsemmisítették a garázst a benne lévő tárgyakkal együtt, valamint megrongálták a nyári konyhát is. A tűzoltóknak ugyanakkor sikerült megakadályozniuk, hogy a tűz átterjedjen a lakóházra és a kazánházra.

 A jelentés szerint a támadás oka valószínűleg az, hogy a határőrök a múlt héten akadályozták a cigarettacsempészek tevékenységét. A határőregység, amelynek az egyik megtámadott határőr is tagja, rejtekhelyre bukkant, ahonnan a csempészek 20 láda cigarettát készültek illegálisan átjuttatni Magyarország területére. A határőrök törvényes fellépése feldühítette a csempészeket, akik úgy döntöttek, bosszút állnak, és megfenyegetik az államhatár védőit. A támadók azt ordították a határőröknek, hogy „vagy velünk lesztek, vagy bajotok lesz!”.
 A támadás helyszínére mentőt és rendőröket hívtak. A határőrök rendőrségi és katonai ügyészségi feljelentést tettek támadóik ellen, akiknek a felkutatása folyamatban van.

Egy esetben költségvetési csalás elkövetésének gyanúja miatt feljelentést tettek.

 A dicsőszentmártoni tűzoltókat hajnali három órakor riasztották a tűzesethez, de beavatkozásuk révén csak a tűz tovább terjedését sikerült megakadályozni. A XIX. században épült faharangláb teljesen leégett, a benne lévő két harang elolvadt. 
 A tűzoltóság illetékese a Zi-de-zi.ro című Maros megyei portálnak nyilatkozva valószínűsítette, hogy gyújtogatás okozta a tüzet. A gyújtogatás gyanúját erősítette meg a Székelyhonnak nyilatkozó Nagy Csaba héderfájai református lelkész is. Elmondta: ismeretlenek két korábbi alkalommal sikertelenül próbálták felgyújtani a haranglábat.
 A lelkész hozzátette: a helyi közösségnek nyugodt élete volt, nem háborították a közösséget belső ellentétek, ezért nehezen magyarázható a vélt szándékos károkozás. Azt is hozzátette: a közeli iskola biztonsági kamerái mozgást rögzítettek az éjszaka, de a felvételek alapján nem azonosíthatók a vélt elkövetők. 
 A Maros megyei Héderfájának a 2011-es népszámláláson 677 lakosa volt, 96 százalékuk magyarnak vallotta magát.
