У Сан-Франциско після рішення суду також відбулося мародерство, демонстранти на знак протесту пограбували магазин Louis Vuitton. Протести відбулися і в Окленді, де учасники назвали двох чоловіків, убитих Ріттенхаусом минулого року, «героями».
Демонстрації пройшли також у Нью-Йорку. Губернатор Кеті Хочул заявила в п’ятницю, що вирок, винесений Ріттенхаусу, «несправедливий» і він показав, що «нам ще багато чого потрібно зробити».
Нагадаємо, у п’ятницю суд виправдав за всіма звинуваченнями 18-річного американця, який у серпні минулого року застрелив двох людей і поранив третю під час акції протесту проти расизму. Під час судового процесу, якому приділялося надзвичайно багато уваги, Ріттенхаус посилався на самооборону. Його справа стала центральною темою дискусій у Сполучених Штатах щодо зброї, самосуду та расових упереджень.
Поворотним моментом у судовому процесі стало те, що один зі свідків обвинувачення зізнався – він направив на хлопця зброю ще до того, як той вистрілив із рушниці. Інші також засвідчили, що Ріттенхауса переслідували ті чоловіки, яких він потім застрелив.
Сенатор-республіканець Том Коттон закликав президента Джо Байдена публічно вибачитися. У червні минулого року Байден під час передвиборної кампанії назвав Ріттенхауса «білим супрематистом». Після рішення суду президент оприлюднив заяву, в якій наголосив, що підтримує рішення присяжних. «Система присяжних працює, і нам потрібно її дотримуватися», – підкреслив Байден.
