За два дні на східному узбережжі Австралії сталися чотири напади акул, три з них у радіусі 15 кілометрів.
Фахівці кажуть, що такого не спостерігалося десятиліттями. «Це найбільша кількість нападів акул як у просторі, так і в часі, яку я бачив за 20 років досліджень», – повідомив ВВС науковець Кріс Пепін Нефф.
18 січня 12-річного хлопчика доставили до лікарні в критичному стані після нападу акули в гавані Сіднея. Наступного дня на пляжі Ді-Вай акула відкусила шматок дошки для серфінгу в 11-річного хлопчика, а вже за кілька годин поблизу Менлі хижак напав на чоловіка, якого госпіталізували з небезпечними для життя травмами. 20 січня четвертий серфінгіст зазнав травми грудної клітки після того, як акула вкусила його дошку приблизно за 300 кілометрів на північ від міста.
Через низку інцидентів закрили десятки пляжів та поновили заклики до боротьби з акулами, але експерти кажуть, що це не стане рішенням проблеми.
Чому раптом сталося стільки нападів?
Дослідники поведінки акул кажуть, що напади спричинені факторами навколишнього середовища та привабливими речовинами у воді. Три інциденти в районі Сіднея, ймовірно, були спричинені акулами-биками, і всім трьом нападам передували дні сильних дощів. Міська метеорологічна станція зафіксувала 127 міліметрів опадів за добу – найвологіший січневий день за останні 38 років.
За словами дослідниці з Університету RMIT Ребекки Олів, це створило ідеальне середовище для акул-биків: «Вони люблять теплу, солонувату воду, якої більшість інших акул уникають. Люблять естуарії та затоки, і прісна вода, що надходить з материка після сильних дощів, була для них ідеальною».
Крім того, дощі змили в море стічні води та поживні речовини, що привабило дрібну рибу, а разом з нею й акул. «У воді точно є щось привабливе. Дрібна риба виходить на поверхню, акули-бики також, усі знаходяться близько до берега, і саме тоді виникає проблема», – пояснює дослідниця.
Чи справді почастішали напади акул?
Згідно з офіційною статистикою, за останні 30 років кількість нападів акул в Австралії справді зросла: з 8–10 випадків на рік у 1990-х до приблизно 20–25 – у 2010-х. Однак дослідники наголошують, що це свідчить не про зростання агресії акул, а радше про збільшення прибережної популяції, поширення водних видів спорту, кращий збір даних та товстіші неопренові костюми, які дозволяють людям довше перебувати у воді.
«Кількість зіткнень набагато вища, ніж раніше, просто тому, що набагато більше людей заходить у воду. Але кількість укусів не зростає з тією ж швидкістю, що й кількість людей у воді. Порівняно з тим, скільки людей щодня користуються океаном, напади трапляються рідко, а смертельні випадки ще рідше».
Експерти зазначають, що ЗМІ, відеозаписи з дронів та неточна термінологія, яка називає кожну зустріч з акулою нападом, також можуть спотворювати громадську думку.
Чи допоможе винищення акул?
Експерти кажуть, що ні. Згадані напади призвели до поновлення закликів до знищення акул, але дослідники рішуче проти цього.
«Я розумію необхідність знищення акул після нападу… але рішуче виступаю проти вбивства акул для підтримки ілюзії безпеки під час серфінгу чи плавання», – каже Пепін Нефф.
За його словами, наука однозначно говорить, що такі заходи не спрацюють. «Це гасла політиків і активістів, але це не збільшить безпеку у воді», – зазначає дослідник. І додає: проблема не в акулах, а в наявності того, що приваблює їх. «Ви можете вбити кожну акулу в гавані Сіднея, але, якщо на півночі є акула, а атрактант усе ще у воді, вона запливе».
Як можна зменшити ризик?
На переконання експертів, найкращий спосіб – підвищити обізнаність: «В Австралії ми маємо ставитися до пляжу як до дикої природи. Австралійці знають, як орієнтуватися в природі. Нам просто треба підкреслити, що океан усе ще дикий. Думка, що він завжди безпечний, а акули завжди небезпечні, неправильна. Навпаки, океан ніколи не буває безпечним, а акули не завжди небезпечні. Ми заважаємо, а не перебуваємо в меню».

Видання нагадує, що дитина стала жертвою нападу акули 18 січня і перебувала у критичному стані. Тоді пораненого хлопчика у критичному стані з серйозними травмами обох ніг доставили до лікарні Сіднея в районі Рендвік. Це був перший із чотирьох інцидентів за наступні 48 годин. Іншим постраждалим 11, 27 та 39 років.

Загиблою виявилася 56-річна Арлін Лілліс із Міннесоти. Напад стався біля західного узбережжя острова. Рятувальні служби прибули на місце події оперативно, надавши жінці першу допомогу в екстремальних умовах. Потерпілу доставили до місцевої лікарні, проте від отриманих травм вона померла.
Поліція перевіряла інформацію про можливу другу жертву, але після обстеження периметра інших постраждалих не виявили. Вид акули, що напала на жінку, наразі не встановлено. Фахівці зазначають, що хоча акул у цих водах бачать часто, напади на людей є винятковим явищем.
Статистика та заходи безпеки
Представниця Департаменту планування та природних ресурсів Ніколь Анджелі підкреслила, що це лише другий подібний випадок у регіоні за останні десять років.

Черговий смертельний напад стався у водах Багамських островів. Акула атакувала пасажирку американського круїзного лайнера під час дайвінгу, жінка померла від отриманих травм.
За даними поліції, нещасний випадок із 58-річною жителькою Пенсільванії стався поблизу популярного місця для дайвінгу Грін-Кей на півночі Багамських островів. За описом родини жінки, це була акула-бик, повідомила інформагенції AP речниця поліції Кріслін Скіпінгс.
Туристка померла після того, як її доставили в лікарню та надали медичну допомогу. Жінка вирушила з Флориди в неділю в семиденну відпустку на борту круїзного лайнера «Harmony of the Seas», а у вівторок взяла участь в екскурсії біля узбережжя Нассау.
Більшість нападів акул у Карибському регіоні відбуваються у водах Багамських островів. У 2019 році тут зафіксували два напади, один із яких був смертельним. Тоді три акули напали на туриста з південної Каліфорнії біля острова Роуз, менш ніж за кілометр від нинішнього інциденту. У грудні 2020 року в водах французького острова Сен-Мартен сталася перша в регіоні смертельна атака акули.
За даними Міжнародного архіву нападів акул (ISAF), що базується у Флориді, з 1749 року в регіоні Багамських островів було зареєстровано щонайменше 32 напади акул, із них 13 – на Кубі.
Біля узбережжя Лонг-Айленда на рятувальника під час тренування напала акула.
Поліція округу Саффолк назвала цей випадок безпрецедентним. Пляж закрили для відпочивальників.
Рятувальник, якого акула вкусила за груди та руку, під час тренування виконував роль постраждалого, повідомив на пресконференції Стів Беллоне, голова місцевого самоврядування округу.
Напад стався в неділю до обіду на пляжі Сміт-Пойнт. Стів Беллоне додав, що поліцейські, які брали участь у навчанні рятувальників, негайно надали допомогу потерпілому.
«Подібного інциденту ще не було, сподіваємося, що ніколи більше й не буде», – додав він.
Після нападу люди помітили у воді акулу, але невідомо, чи саме вона атакувала рятувальника. Очікується, що незабаром пляж знову відкриється.
Як ми повідомляли раніше, на одному з популярних курортів у Єгипті внаслідок нападу акули загинула 68-річна громадянка Австрії. Наступного дня стало відомо, що під час такого самого інциденту на узбережжі Червоного моря загинула ще одна туристка.
