A tengerparti Mariupol ostroma közben meghalt az orosz támadók egyik tábornoka, Oleg Mitjajev – közölte Anton Herascsenko, az ukrán belügyminiszter tanácsadója kedd éjszaka a Telegram közösségi oldalon. A tanácsadó egy fényképet is közölt, amelyen állítása szerint az elhunyt vezérőrnagy látható.
Mitjajev a negyedik orosz tábornok, akinek a halálát ukrán részről bejelentették. Orosz oldalról nem erősítették meg a hírt. Egy orosz tábornok eleséséről mindazonáltal Volodimir Zelenszkij ukrán elnök is említést tett éjszakai üzenetében. Ő azonban nevet nem említett.
Élénk találgatások övezik, hogy a magas rangú orosz tisztek hogyan lehetnek annyira a tűzvonalban, hogy áldozatul esnek az ukrán ellentámadásoknak. Az egyik sejtés, hogy a magas rangú tisztek mozgásáról valahogyan értesülnek az ukránok és célzott támadást tudnak indítani. A másik szerint az orosz invázió akadozása, a csapatok bizonytalankodása közvetlenebb irányítást igényel, és emiatt kerülhetnek a tábornokok túl közel a harcvonalhoz.
A február 24-én kezdődött orosz támadásokban szintén fontos célpontnak számító Harkiv régió vezetője, Oleh Szinehubov arról számolt be, hogy a kelet-ukrajnai városnál kedden visszaszorították a támadókat. A Telegramon Szinehubov azt írta, hogy az orosz erők előző álláspontjuknál is távolabbra kényszerültek visszahúzódni. Az ukrán vezérkar szerdára virradóra arról adott hírt, hogy az Ukrajnába behatolt orosz egységek 40 százaléka már jelentős veszteségeket szenvedett vagy teljesen megsemmisült. Független forrásból erre vonatkozóan sem érkezett megerősítés.
Denisz Smihal miniszterelnök egy friss nyilatkozatában kijelentette, hogy a február 24-én kezdődött háború már eddig több száz milliárd dolláros kárt okozott Ukrajnában. A gazdasági minisztérium számításai szerint csak az infrastruktúrában 119 milliárd dollárnyi kár keletkezett.
Washingtonban pedig kedden a Fehér Ház egy tisztségviselője arról tájékoztatott újságírókat, hogy Joe Biden elnök jelentős, 800 millió dolláros újabb amerikai támogatás bejelentésére készül Ukrajna számára. Zelenszkij szerdán videokapcsolaton keresztül felszólal az amerikai kongresszusban, és Biden a tervek szerint akkor jelenti be hivatalosan a segítséget, amely a biztonság megerősítését szolgálja.
