Egy álnéven élő amerikai házaspár Hawaii-n lévő házában láthatatlan tintát, titkosírással írt dokumentumokat, valamint az amerikai katonai támaszpontokat feltüntető térképet is találtak, de ők mindent tagadnak.
Évtizedekig két, csecsemőkorukban meghalt gyerek személyi adatait felhasználva élték életüket, KGB-egyenruhában fényképezkedtek és amikor őrizetbe vették őket, úgy beszélgettek egymással, mintha kémek lennének – ez az Egyesült Államokban őrizetbe vett Morrison-Primrose, vagy éppen Fort-Montague házaspár rövid élettörténete. Viszont a hatóságok nem tudják, mi áll a furcsa történet hátterében, a letartóztatásban lévő mindenesetre tagadják, hogy valóban kémek lennének.
A talányt bonyolítja, hogy Walter Glenn Primrose az amerikai hadseregnek is dolgozott: húsz évig elektrotechnikusként a parti őrségnél volt – ott hozzáfért titkokhoz is – majd leszerelése után továbbra is kapcsolatban maradt a fegyveres erőkkel. Amikor pedig házkutatást tartottak a házaspár Hawaii-n lévő házában, láthatatlan tintát, titkosírással írt dokumentumokat, valamint az amerikai katonai támaszpontokat feltüntető térképet is találtak. Ami pedig a legfurcsább: egy 30-40 évvel ezelőtt készült, ugyancsak a házban lefoglalt polaroid képen Primrose, és felesége, Gwynn Darle Morrison az egykori szovjet titkosszolgálat, a KGB egyenruhájában feszít.
A kihallgatás során mindketten azt állították, hogy a kép „viccből” készült, s bár aligha valószínű, hogy minden amerikai háztartásban lenne egy humoros fotók készítését lehetővé tévő eredeti KGB-s egyenruha, az mindenképpen furcsa, hogy a külön-külön készült képeken Morrison és Primrose ugyanazt az egyenruhát viseli.
Primrose és Morrison az 1980-as évek elejétől viselkednek furcsán. Akkor – arra hivatkozva, hogy jogi és pénzügyi okok miatt kell nevet változtatniuk – kiköltöztek házukból, a kulcsot odaadták a szomszédjuknak, akivel közölték, hogy bármit elvihet, amit csak akar. Néha más történetet adtak elő, akadtak, akiknek azt mondták, azért váltanak személyiséget, mert részt vesznek egy tanúvédelmi programban. A névcserét 1987-ben hajtották végre: Primrose ezt követően az 1967-ben meghalt Bobby Edward Fort személyes adatait használta, míg felesége az 1968-ban elhunyt Juline Lynn Montague-ként élt tovább. Mivel mindketten 1955-ben születtek, így az új adatok több mint egy évtizeddel fiatalabbnak mutatták őket.
A cserebere ellenére kitartottak egymás mellett, új nevükön is házasságot kötöttek egymással. Primrose részben megtartotta régi életét is: egy postafiókot tartott fenn saját nevén, ám nem reagált az odaérkező levelekre, még apja temetésére sem ment el.
A kihallgatások után az amerikai hatóságok úgy döntöttek, Primrose annak ellenére is őrizetben marad, hogy nincsenek egyértelmű bizonyítékok arra, hogy kapcsolatban áll volna külföldi titkosszolgálatokkal. Morrison ügyében még nem született döntés, a hatóságok jövő kedden jelentik be, őrizetben marad-e a kémgyanút határozottan tagadó asszony.
Viszont a személyiséglopásért és a huzamos ideig folytatott csalás miatt hosszú időre börtönbe kerülhetnek, akár 17 évet is kaphatnak.
