 A jelentés szerint a kaliforniai Ethan Hertweket december 8-án ölték meg oroszok Ukrajnában, mindössze 11 nappal azelőtt, hogy haza kellett volna térnie az Egyesült Államokban.
  
 Graham Dale, egy másik amerikai tengerészgyalogos veterán, aki Írországban született és később az Egyesült Államokba vándorolt ki, december 9-én esett el az orosz erőkkel vívott közelharcban. Unokatestvére Ryan O’Leary, az amerikai hadsereg veteránja, szerint Dale akkor vesztette életét, amikor visszaverte az orosz csapatok támadását, és nem engedte áttörni egységnek a védelmi vonalát.
 „Ahelyett, hogy visszavonult volna vagy elbújt volna, belevetette magát a csatába. Dale több ellenséges katonát megölt, mielőtt megsebesült volna. Az ellenséges támadást megállították neki és a vele lévő ukránoknak köszönhetően, akik megakadályozták a vonal áttörését. A bajtársai biztonságos helyre vitték, és megpróbálták megmenteni az életét, de belehalt a sérüléseibe” – tette hozzá.
 Az amerikai rádióállomás által vezetett lista szerint 2022 februárja óta legalább 46 amerikai halt meg Ukrajnában, köztük 11 tengerészgyalogos veterán. Hivatalos amerikai források nem közöltek becsléseket az amerikai önkéntesek ukrajnai halálával kapcsolatban.

 A sajtószóvivő elmondása szerint a tragédia a Kramatorszki járásban történt, de az ok ismeretlen. Vannak azonban információk, hogy abban az időben felszállt egy orosz SZU–35-ös vadászgép felszállt, és ukrán helikopterek leszálláshoz készültek – tette hozzá, megjegyezve, hogy ez az esetleges támadás elleni védelem érdekében történik.
  
 „Igen, valóban volt egy légi szerencsétlenség két Mi–8-as helikopter részvételével. Harci küldetést teljesítettek. Mikor a feladatot végrehajtották, egy ellenséges SZU–35-ös vadászgép volt a levegőben” – ismertette Jevlas.
 A szóvivő ugyanakkor hangsúlyozta, hogy a halottak számára vonatkozó adatok még pontosításra szorulnak. „De a 18. különálló hadsereg repülődandárja sajtószolgálatának vezetője már arról számolt be, hogy hat halott van. A nyomozók jelenleg vizsgálják annak részleteit és körülményeit, hogy pontosan mi okozta a légi szerencsétlenséget. A bizottság jelenleg dolgozik. Hogy mi okozta ezt a katasztrófát, az később derül majd ki” – emlékeztetett Ilja Jevlas.
