Robbanás pusztította el hétfőn a pennsylvaniai US Steel Clairton acélgyár egy részét: a robbanásban két ember meghalt, tíz pedig megsérült. A CBS szerint a tíz sebesültből öten kritikus, de stabil állapotban vannak, a többieket már kiengedték a kórházból. Az üzem Észak-Amerika legnagyobb kokszgyára, és Pittsburghtől körülbelül 15 mérföldre, azaz kb. 24 km-re található. A US Steel szerint körülbelül 1300 alkalmazott dolgozik náluk.
David B. Burritt, az US Steel elnöke és vezérigazgatója nyilatkozatában elmondta, hogy a vállalat „szoros együttműködésben áll a vonatkozó hatóságokkal az esemény okainak kivizsgálása érdekében”. Később a sajtótájékoztatón azt mondta, hogy az üzem „stabil”, de „a nyomozás még folyamatban van”.
A Clairton Coke Works története során folyamatosan szennyezési problémákkal küzdött, és az elmúlt években több millió dollárt kellett fizetnie bírságok, büntetések és peren kívüli egyezségek formájában.
A gyár tulajdonosát, a US Steelt 2023-ban például 2,2 millió dollárra (kb. 750 millió forintra) bírságolták, mert az üzem hidrogén-szulfid-kibocsátása meghaladta a Pennsylvania államban érvényes normákat, és elrendelték, hogy a vállalat nyújtson be tervet a hatóságoknak az állami normáknak való megfelelésről.
