A közösségi oldalakon péntek este terjedtek el a bazilikában tartózkodóktól rögzített felvételek.
Egy férfi, hátizsákkal a vállán, felmászott a főoltárra, letépte az oltárt borító fehér terítőt, majd a földre döntötte az oltáron sorakozó hat gyertyatartót. A bazilika biztonságát felügyelő őrök azonnal intézkedtek, és a férfit a földre teperték.
A Vatikán által közölt információk szerint az elkövető román állampolgárságú.
Súlyos elmezavarban szenvedő személyről van szó, akit a vatikáni hatóságok kiadtak az olasz szerveknek – hangoztatta Matteo Bruni szentszéki szóvivő. Az ezernyolcszázas évekből származó gyertyatartók helyreállítási költségét harmincezer euróra becsülte.
A rendkívüli biztonsági ellenőrzések ellenére a Szent Péter-bazilikában nem ritka a vandalizmus. A legismertebb eset 1972-ben történt, amikor a magyar származású ausztrál Tóth László kalapáccsal rongálta meg Michelangelo Pietá nevű szobrát, amelyet akkor még nem védett biztonsági üveg.
2019-ben egy olasz mászott fel a főoltárra, és a földre döntött egy gyertyatartót.
2022-ben egy egyiptomi származású amerikai a Vatikáni Múzeum ókori gyűjteménye két szobrát döntötte le.
