A donbaszi Avgyijivka elfoglalásáért folytatott harcok során az orosz csapatok rendkívül súlyos veszteségeket szenvedtek el. Egy X-en megjelent videó alapján az első BTR-90-es is kiesett a harcokból.
A BTR-90-es az orosz csapatok legmodernebb, szolgálatba állított páncélozott szállító harcjárműve (a jóval modernebb Kurganec-25-ösök az Armatákhoz hasonlóan nem vesznek részt harcokban). A nagyon alacsony szériában gyártott jármű a jóval elterjedtebb BTR-80-asnál jelentősen komolyabb páncélzattal rendelkezik, a nagyobb kasznira pedig a szintén népszerű BMP-2-es gyalogsági harcjármű tornyát szerelték fel.
A jármű fegyverzete így egy 30 mm-es gépágyúból, egy 30 mm-es gránátvetőből és egy 7,62×39 mm-es golyószóróból áll, de felszerelhető rá tankelhárító rakéta is.
A videón látható példányt valahol Avgyijivka környékén hagyták hátra az orosz csapatok. A térségben folyó rendkívül heves harcok nagyban megnehezítik a műszaki mentést, így elég valószínű az, hogy az ukrán drónok hamarabb végeznek a páncélossal, minthogy az oroszok javítás céljából el tudják vontatni. Október végén egyébként már megjelent egy videó, amelyen egy BTR-90-es látható a falu környékén, ekkor még épen.
A veszteség azért is különösen kellemetlen, mert a rendelkezésre álló információk szerint a BTR-90-esekből mindössze 12 példány készült el, melyeket a Roszgvardija köteléke használ.
