Egy amerikai romboló a Dél-kínai-tengeren, a vitatott hovatartozású Paracel-szigetek közelébe hajózott, de kínai jelentés szerint elkergették a hadihajót – írja a Reuters.
Az Egyesült Államok rendszeresen hajt végre úgynevezett hajózási szabadságot biztosító műveleteket a Dél-kínai-tengeren, amelynek szinte egészét magának követeli Kína, de a délkelet-ázsiai országok egy jó részének is egymással is konfliktusban lévő tengeri területi igényei vannak. Kína katonai infrastruktúrával ellátott mesterséges szigeteket épít a tengeren, hogy ezzel támassza alá igényeit.
Az amerikai haditengerészet szerint az USS Benfold a nemzetközi joggal összhangban érvényesítette a hajózási jogokat és szabadságokat a Dél-kínai-tengeren, a Paracel-szigetek közelében.
Kína nem így látja: szerintük a hadihajó súlyosan megsértette Kína szuverenitását és szabadságát, mivel illegálisan behatolt felségvizeire. A Paracel-szigetek térségére Tajvan és Vietnam is igényt tart.
Peking 1974-ben szerzett ellenőrzést az akkoriban (a később az északi országrészbe beolvadt) Dél-Vietnam államhoz tartozó szigetek fölött.
