A Highland Games (skót felföldi játékok) egyik rendezvényén vesztette életét egy 65 éves férfi. A szörnyű baleset akkor következett be, amikor a 10 kilós kalapács átrepült a sövényen, és eltalálta az arra sétáló férfit.
Szemtanúk szerint a 65 éves áldozat nem volt nézője a hollandiai Geldrop kastélyban vasárnap megrendezett Open Highland Games-nek – írja a Sun.

A férfi a kastély kertjében sétált, amikor a semmiből megjelent a kalapács és eltalálta.
Maga a kalapács egy fából készült rúd, amelyhez egy fémgolyó van rögzítve, és amely férfiaknál általában 10 kilós.
Az egyik szemtanú az Omroep Brabant helyi hírügynökségnek nyilatkozott: Láttuk, ahogy a golyó átrepül a sövényen, majd a túloldalról egy hangos női sikolyt hallottuk.
A mentőszolgálat, köztük egy helikopter is a helyszínre érkezett, de az áldozatot nem tudták megmenteni.
A dobóverseny az ősi skót játékok hagyományos része, amelyben a versenyzők egy „kalapácsot” lóbálnak a fejük körül, és olyan messzire dobják, amilyen messzire csak tudják.

A hatnapos, 251 km hosszú sivatagi verseny második napján történt a tragédia, ami hirtelen szívmegállás miatt következett be. Az ötvenes évei elején járó férfi minden orvosi követelményt teljesített a verseny lebonyolításához, és az első szakaszt gond nélkül teljesítette.
A verseny második napján azonban összeesett, két sporttársa, akik mind a ketten orvosok, azonnal segítségére siettek, sőt perceken belül helikopterrel megérkezett a rendezvény orvosi stábja is, ám a 45 percen át tartó újraélesztési kísérletet követően végül nem tudták megmenteni. A viharos tengeren 15 órán át kapaszkodott egy bójába két fiatal ír nő, akit evezés közben sodort ki az erős szél a nyílt vízre egy védett öbölből, a Galway megyei Furbóban.
Az RTE ír köztévé beszámolója szerint szerdán este jelentették a 17 és 21 éves unokatestvérek eltűnését, akik a Galway-öbölben hódoltak a deszkán evezés sportjának.
Egyikük édesanyja értesítette a parti őrséget este tíz óra körül, miután a lányok nem tértek vissza. A parti őrség helyi önkéntesek segítségével nagyszabású tengeri és légi keresést indítottak a felkutatásukra, végül csütörtök hajnalban egy halász és a fia találta meg őket 27 kilométerre eltűnésük helyétől.
A lányok egy homárcsapda helyét jelző bójába kapaszkodva vészelték át az éjszakát a nyílt tengeren a szakadó esőben és erős szélben.
Evezőlapátjukat lengetve próbálták felhívni magukra a figyelmet.
A halász elmondta, hogy a lányok nagyon kimerültek voltak, de azért tudtak ülni, és egy kicsit beszélgetni is lehetett velük. Megmentőjük egy kis szigetre vitte őket, ahonnét helikopterrel szállították kórházba a bajba került fiatalokat.
