Muktada asz-Szadr ismert síita hitszónok hívei az iraki legfelsőbb bíróság bagdadi épülete elé vonultak kedden, és eltorlaszolták a bejáratot.
Musztafa al-Kádimi ügyvivő miniszterelnök a hír hallatán lerövidítette egyiptomi látogatását, és hazaérkezése után azonnal nyugalomra, párbeszédre szólította fel a politikai pártokat.
Az általános gazdasági és szociális válság sújtotta Irakban a 2021 októberi parlamenti választás óta van politikai patthelyzet: a hagyományosan a síita mozgalmat illető miniszterelnöki székért két mozgalom verseng, de egyik sem tudott többséget szerezni a 329 tagú parlamentben.
A Muktada asz-Szadr vezette patrióta mozgalom 73 mandátummal megnyerte a választást, de sem ő, sem ellenfele, az Irán-barát Koordinációs Keret mozgalom nem tudott többséget szerezni és miniszterelnököt jelölni.
Miután a két tömb közötti egyeztetések kudarcot vallottak, Muktada asz-Szadr júniusban lemondatta parlamenti képviselőit, és előrehozott parlamenti választást követel, hívei pedig három hete ülősztrájkkal veszik körül a parlament épületét.
A Koordinációs Keret beleegyezett, hogy a képviselők révén feloszlassa magát az iraki parlament, de Szadr elutasította a javaslatot, mert azt szeretné, hogy a legfelsőbb bíróság oszlassa fel a testületet.
A bíróság erre úgy reagált, hogy nincs jogi lehetősége a parlament feloszlatására, és felfüggesztette saját működését.
A Koordinációs Keret mozgalom ezzel párhuzamosan szintén ülősztrájkba kezdett híveivel a kormányzati és diplomáciai negyed határán.
A két mozgalom tüntetői egyelőre egyik helyszínen sem folyamodtak erőszakhoz, mert az ettől tartó rendőrség jelentős erőkkel vonult ki és fenntartja a rendet.
Az ügyvivő miniszterelnök a múlt hétre egy tisztázó megbeszélésre hívta a két síita mozgalmat, de az ülés Szadr bojkottja miatt meghiúsult.
A hitszónok egy olyan alkotmánymódosítást is követel, amely a jelenlegihez képest jelentősen megnövelné a választás győztesének jogi mozgásterét.
Az országban jelentős befolyással bíró Muktada asz-Szadr imámnak több minisztériumban és a helyi közigazgatásban is számos szövetségese van, de a rajta kívül eső politikai elitet korrupcióval és azzal is vádolja, hogy megfélemlítik az igazságszolgáltatásban dolgozókat.

Április 4-én a bangladesi Shitalaksha folyón egy teherhajó és egy komp ütközött, amelyen közel ötven utas tartózkodott, 5 ember életét vesztette.
