 A nigériai hadsereg kimentett 241 embert a Boko Haram iszlamista terroristaszervezet fogságából az északkeleti Borno államban – jelentette az MTI. 
 A túszokat, akik közt 105 nő és 136 gyerek volt, Mudu település mellett végrehajtott akció során a hét végén szabadították ki. John Enenche, a hadsereg egyik szóvivője azt mondta, a kimentettekre jelenleg orvosok vigyáznak. A műveletben a hadsereg végzett 12 terroristával.
 Borno állam északkeleti része, amely közel fekszik a Csád-tóhoz, kis szigetekkel és mocsarakkal tűzdelt, kiterjedt, katonailag nehezen ellenőrizhető terület, ahol szélsőségesek búvóhelye, kiképzőtáborai is találhatók.
 Május közepén négy ország, Nigéria, Niger, Csád és Kamerun közösen csapott le a szervezetre.
 Muhammadu Buhari nigériai elnök csütörtökön a műveletek fokozására szólította fel a hadsereget, nem sokkal azután, hogy ismeretlen fegyveresek szerdán több falut megtámadtak az északnyugati Sokoto államban, és legalább 70 embert meggyilkoltak. A környékbeli kórház egyik orvosa szerint az embereket egyszerűen fejbe lőtték.
 Buhari kijelentette, hogy térdre fogják kényszeríteni a pszichopata gyilkosokat, akik nem tisztelik az emberi életet.
 A Boko Haram és a nigériai kormány közötti konfliktusban több mint 36 ezren vesztették életüket 2009 óta Nigéria északkeleti részén, és csaknem kétmillióan váltak földönfutóvá – az utóbbi hetekben is tízezrek menekültek el a harcok elől Nigerbe. A dzsihadisták elleni harcot nehezíti, hogy a helyi kormányok is igen erőszakosan lépnek fel a helyi lakossággal szemben, a velük szövetséges milíciák is előszeretettel vetnek be gyerekkatonákat, és a rutinszerűen „dzsihadistá”-nak bélyegzett akciók is sokszor valójában inkább az etnikai konfliktusokat, a földművelők és állattartók évszázados ellentéteit, netán az egyszerű banditizmust takarják.
