Az előző évhez képest 12,7 százalékkal nőtt és ezzel tízéves csúcsot ért el 2020-ban az erdőtüzek száma Brazíliában – írja az MTI.
A brazil űrkutatási hivatal (INPE) műholdas adatai szerint tavaly 222 798 erdőtűz pusztított a Dél-Amerikai országban, ami a legmagasabb szám 2010 óta.
Ebből több mint 103 ezer erdőtűz az amazonasi esőerdő brazíliai részét sújtotta, ami csaknem 16 százalékos éves növekedést jelent, míg a világ legnagyobb vizenyős területének, a Pantanalnak a brazíliai részén több mint 22 ezer tüzet regisztráltak tavaly. Ez utóbbi 120 százalékot is meghaladó növekedés volt az előző évhez képest.
A világ legnagyobb esőerdejének otthont adó Amazonas-medence kulcsszerepet játszik az éghajlatváltozás megfékezésében a légköri szén-dioxid elnyelése révén. Az amazonasi esőerdő nagyjából 60 százaléka Brazíliához tartozik.
A szelíd lejtőkben és kanyargós folyókban gazdag Pantanal területe Brazíliától egészen Bolíviáig és Paraguayig nyúlik. A mocsaras terület brazíliai részének csaknem negyede a lángok martalékává vált tavaly, miközben a régiót az elmúlt fél évszázad legpusztítóbb aszálya sújtotta.
Az állati tetemekkel borított kiégett vidékről készült felvételek sokkolták a világot, heves ellenérzéseket kiváltva Jair Bolsonaro brazil elnök kormányával szemben, amiért nem fékezi meg a pusztítást.
A klímaszkeptikus elnököt éles bírálatok érik az Amazonas-medencében folyó egyre nagyobb volumenű erdőirtás miatt is. Bolsonaro korábban enyhítette az Amazónia természeti kincseinek kiaknázására vonatkozó szabályozásokat.
Az amazonasi esőerdő brazíliai részén 48,7 százalékkal nőtt az erdőtüzek száma 2019-ben, Bolsonaro hivatalba lépésének első évében.
Szakértők szerint az amazonasi esőerdőt sújtó tüzek többségét emberek gyújtják, hogy megtisztítsák a földet a mezőgazdasági termeléshez és állattenyésztéshez.
