Boris Beckert deportálhatják az Egyesült Királyságból abban a pillanatban, ahogy kilép a börtön kapuján – értesült a Mirror című brit bulvárlap a belügyminisztériumtól. A tárca megerősítette, hogy ez vonatkozik minden külföldi állampolgárra, akit elítéltek.
Az 54 éves egykori világelső teniszező, háromszoros wimbledoni bajnok két és fél éves börtönbüntetését tölti csalás miatt. Becker áprilisban eredetileg az ország legrosszabbjának nevezett londoni Wandsworth börtönbe vonult be, de később átvitték egy kevésbé szigorú helyre az oxforshire-i Huntercombe-ba. Börtönforrások szerint az ideje nagy részét asztalitenisszel tölti, és sporttudományra tanítja a rabtársait.
„Becker kihasználja az összes létesítményt. Nyugodtan nevezhetjük mintarabnak, nincs vele semmi probléma” – mondta a forrás a lapnak.
Becker egykor 127 millió fontos vagyonnal rendelkezett, de mára teljesen csődbe jutott. (Egy font 467 forint.) A nemrégiben lezajlott wimbledoni bajnokság alatt meglátogatta a börtönben a barátnője, Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro és a fiai, a 28 éves Noah és a 22 éves Elias, és egykori riválisa,
a szintén háromszoros wimbledoni bajnok John McEnroe is alig várta, hogy láthassa őt.
„Boris a barátom. Ez borzalmas. Látni akarom őt, ha lehet” – mondta a BBC-nek a torna előtt. – Rettenetesen érzem magam. Ő az egyik legnagyobb játékos a tenisz történetében. Hosszú ideig sok mindenen kellett keresztülmennie. Állandóan mondogatja nekem, hogy minden rendben lesz, kézben tartja a dolgokat. Ez Boris” – tette hozzá.
McEnroe még közvetítés közben is szóba hozta Beckert, amivel sok kritikát váltott ki.
