Nem tudta elkerülni az ütközést a tehervonat vezetője, amikor a húsz fős elefántcsorda a síneken kelt át a srí lankai Minneriya város közelében, pénteken.

A vonatszerelvény nyolc tartálykocsiból állt, ezek összesen 400 ezer liter üzemanyagot szállítottak. Két tartály kisiklott, ezek megrepedtek, jelentős mennyiségű üzemanyag folyt ki. A vonalon fel is függesztették a közlekedést – írta a New York Post.
A vonaton a mozdonyvezetőn kívül még ketten voltak, ők nem sérültek meg.

A délnyugati Jünnan tartomány hatóságai attól tartottak, hogy konfliktus alakulhat ki a lakosok és a 14 ázsiai elefánt között, amelyek hónapok óta vándorolnak. Az állami média jelentése szerint több mint 25 ezer rendőr járművekkel és drónokkal figyelte a csordát.
A védett állatok mintegy 17 hónappal ezelőtt hagytak el egy jünnani természetvédelmi területet. Azóta a nemzetközi címlapokra kerültek 500 km-es rendkívüli vándorlásukkal, amelynek során mezőkön, városokon és településeken keresztül vándoroltak, több millió dollár értékű termést fogyasztottak el és épületeket rongáltak meg.
Ahogy a csorda közeledett a településekhez, az embereket ideiglenesen kitelepítették, hogy megelőzzék a konfliktusokat, mivel a helyi lakosok megpróbálták megvédeni terményeiket és otthonaikat. Júniusra az állatok elérték a tartományi főváros, Kunming külvárosát. Az arra irányuló erőfeszítések, hogy megállítsák őket és visszaküldjék a Mengyangi természetvédelmi területre, kezdetben kudarcot vallottak, de végül a csorda megfordult és hazafelé vette az irányt.
Wan Yong, aki az elefántokat felügyelő csoportot vezeti, hétfőn egy sajtótájékoztatón elmondta, hogy a csorda átkelt a Yuanjiang folyón, és folytatta útját dél felé. Elektromos kerítéseket, csalikat és mesterséges utakat használtak annak biztosítására, hogy az állatok a helyes utat kövessék. Az AP szerint vasárnap estére a csorda mintegy 200 km-re volt a rezervátumtól.
A szakértők szerint nem világos, hogy az elefántok pontosan miért hagyták el szokásos élőhelyüket, hogy útnak induljanak. Egyesek szerint egy tapasztalatlan vezető vezethette félre a csordát, míg mások szerint az elefántok új élőhelyet kereshettek. Az ázsiai elefánt veszélyeztetett faj. Kínában mindössze mintegy 300 vadon élő elefánt él, amelyek – a vándorló csordához hasonlóan – főként Jünnan tartomány déli részén élnek.
