A férfi négy embert, köztük a rabbit ejtette túszul a zsinagógában, egyikőjüket több mint hat óra után szabadon engedte. A többi túszt órákkal később szabadította ki az FBI különleges egysége, sajtóforrások az akciót kísérő fegyverropogásról és vélhetően villanógránátok okozta robbanásokról számoltak be.
Greg Abbott texasi kormányzó Twitteren arról tájékoztatott, hogy a kiszabadult túszok jól vannak.
A tettes helyi idő szerint szombat délelőtt hatolt be a zsinagógába, ahonnan online élőben közvetítették a szertartást. A férfi a túszok elengedéséért cserébe egy Aisha Siddiqui nevű pakisztáni származású nő szabadon bocsátását követelte. Siddiquit 2010-ben egy amerikai bíróság 86 év börtönbüntetésre ítélte, amiért Afganisztánban amerikai katonákat és FBI-ügynököket próbált megölni, és egy Colleyville-hez közeli szövetségi börtönben tölti büntetését. Egyes sajtóforrások szerint a túszejtő Siddiqui testvére volt.
A hatóságok mindössze azt közölték, kiderítették a férfi személyazonosságát, ám azt egyelőre nem fedték fel a sajtó előtt. „Terroristák” által egy kijevi zsinagógában túszul ejtett kijevi izraeli nagykövet és zsidó hívek kiszabadítását mímelő speciális gyakorlatot tartott az Ukrán Biztonsági Szolgálat (SZBU) Izrael ukrajnai nagykövetségével karöltve vasárnap Kijevben – adta hírül az Ukrajinszka Pravda hírportál az SZBU Facebook-közlésére hivatkozva.
A közlés szerint a főváros Pecserszk kerületi Brodszkij Choral Zsinagógájában megtartott túszszabadítási művelettel az SZBU Alfa különleges egysége az ágazatközi együttműködési készséget gyakorolta. A gyakorlat legendája szerint a fővárosi zsinagógában „terroristák” túszul ejtették Izrael kijevi nagykövetét és a zsidó híveket. A szabadítási akcióban az SZBU speciális alakulat mellett részt vettek a Nemzeti Rendőrség, a Nemzeti Gárda és a Rendkívüli Helyzetek Állami Szolgálatának egységei és más hatóságok munkatársai.
Az SZBU Terrorellenes Központja törzsének vezetői nagyra értékelték Kijev terrorellenes szolgálatainak az együttműködési szintjét és hatékonyságát. Az izraeli partnerek köszönetet mondtak a terrorellenes gyakorlat résztvevőinek az együttműködésért a biztonsági kérdésekben.

Ismeretlen elkövető még május 1-jén belőtt a Poltava megyei Kremencsuk zsinagógájának az ablakán, amelynek az üvegét átlyukasztotta a lövedék, de visszatartották az információt az esetről, tartva attól, hogy pánik tör ki a helyi zsidó közösségben – adta hírül hétfőn a JewishNews ukrán zsidó hírportál.
A jelentés szerint a kremencsuki zsidó közösség az Ukrajnai Egyesült Zsidó Közösséggel együtt azért döntött a zsinagóga elleni támadásról szóló hír nyilvánosságra hozásáról, mert elavultság miatt szükségessé vált a zsinagóga térfigyelő kamerarendszerének a cseréje. Mivel a keremencsuki zsinagóga igen nagy, a helyi zsidó közösség nem tudja önerőből finanszírozni a térfigyelő rendszer korszerűsítését, ezért adakozásra kér mindenkit, akinek nem közömbös a zsinagóga sorsa. A pénzadományok fogadására a helyi zsidók speciális internetes oldalt nyitottak.
A zsinagógát ért incidens tényének nyilvánosságra hozatalával a kremencsuki zsidók sürgetni szeretnék az antiszemitizmus elleni 5109. sz. törvénytervezet elfogadását, amelynek hatályba lépése esetén szigorúbb felelősségre lehetne vonni a hasonló cselekmények elkövetőit. A jogszabálytervezet szövegét a Legfelső Tanács két szakbizottsága már jóváhagyta.

A Jeruzsálem melletti Givat Zeév egyik zsinagógájában vasárnap összeomlott egy emelvény. Legalább hatvan ember sérült meg, sokan súlyosan – jelentette a 11-es közszolgálati TV vasárnap este.
Az állványzaton férfiak álltak Givat Zeév újonnan felépített és még nem teljesen befejezett, a Karlini haszidokat szolgáló zsinagógájában. A sérülteket jeruzsálemi kórházakba szállították.
A zsinagóga tele volt a Savuót ünnep kezdetének közös imádkozásán, az emelvényen az ultraortodox közösség több száz fiatalja állt.
A tűzoltóság képviselője, Dedi Szimhi a 11-es TV-ben elmondta, hogy az épületnek még nem volt működési engedélye, és nem lett volna szabad rendezvényt tartani benne. A helyi önkormányzatot előre figyelmeztették a veszélyre.
Az önkormányzat három napja a rendőrséghez fordult, segítségüket kérte a tömeges imádkozás megakadályozására, a zsinagóga lezárására. A rendőrség nem engedélyezte az épület megnyitását az imádkozók számára, az imatermet mégis megnyitották.
Április végén Észak-Izraelben, a Meron-hegy oldalában szintén az ultraortodox közösségben történt tömegszerencsétlenség, amelyben 45 férfi vesztette életét, amikor a bádoglapok között kialakított folyosón vonuló sokezres tömeg elakadt, majd az odavezető lépcsőn megcsúsztak és egymásra estek az emberek, és a zsúfoltság miatt nem tudtak kiszabadulni.
