A Nemzetközi Atomenergia-ügynökség (NAÜ) vasárnap este arról számolt be, hogy a csernobili nukleáris hulladéktárolókat üzemeltető személyzet felhagyott a biztonsági-karbantartási munkálatokkal a szellemi és fizikai kimerültség miatt.
Az atomerőmű február végén került orosz csapatok kezére, azóta nem váltották le a 211 fős műszaki stábot.
Az ukrán atomerőműveket működtető Enerhoatom állami vállalat egyébként vasárnap a kijevi energiaügyi minisztériumra hivatkozva bejelentette, hogy a csernobili atomerőműben helyreállt az áramszolgáltatás.
Herman Haluscsenko energiaügyi miniszter az Enerhoatom által közzétett közleményben jelentette be, hogy az Ukrenerho, szakemberei, atommérnökei és villanyszerelői erőfeszítéseinek köszönhetően állt helyre a bezárt atomerőmű áramellátása, és a fűtőelemek hűtőrendszere ismét rendben működik. A miniszter szerint nem volt külső segítségre szükség az áramszolgáltatás helyreállításához.

Tovább tart a szokatlan hideg az Egyesült Államokban, az ország több déli államából szerdán vízhiányt is jelentettek.
Több állam, egyebek közt az Egyesült Államok második legnépesebbének számító Texas hatóságai szerint az áramkimaradások miatt a vízvezetékek megfagytak. Akadozik vagy leállt a vízszolgáltatás Louisiana, Tennessee és Oklahoma több városában is.
Texasban, ahonnan a legnagyobb áramkimaradásokat jelentették, mintegy hétmillió embert – a lakosság egynegyedét – kértek a hatóságok a vízfogyasztás csökkentésére vagy szüneteltetésére, a 45 ezres Kyle város vezetősége egyenesen arra szólította fel az embereket, csak létfontosságú esetben használják a vizet, mert a város készletei vészesen fogynak.
Abilene városában egy ház teljesen leégett, mert a kiérkező tűzoltók az alacsony víznyomás miatt nem tudták eloltani a tüzet.
A Tennessee állambeli Memphis közműszolgáltatója szintén alacsony víznyomásról számolt be, hozzátéve, hogy több vízvezeték megfagyott, és eltört. A szolgáltató több praktikus tanáccsal is szolgált, egyebek közt arra kérte az embereket, rövidebben zuhanyozzanak, és lehetőleg várjanak a mosással péntekig.
A Louisana állambeli Shreveport egyik kórházában vihar miatt állt le a vízszolgáltatás, a vezetőség a tűzoltóság segítségét kérte.
Az ugyanebben az államban található Lake Charles város polgármestere, Nic Hunter szerdán azt mondta, ha nem nő a víznyomás, a helyi kórházak nem tudják ellátni a betegeket, akiket így máshová kell majd szállítaniuk.
Az AP hírügynökség szerint a szélsőséges időjárás eddig több mint harminc ember életét követelte.
Joe Biden amerikai elnök a héten telefonon beszélt Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Kansas, Tennessee, Mississippi és Oklahoma kormányzóival és közölte velük, hogy a kormány kész segítséget nyújtani a történelmi vihar átvészelésében.

A havaseső és az erős széllökések miatt bedolgozott a távvezetékek biztonsági rendszere, mely 357 településen vezetett áramszünethez Poltava, Szumi, Dnyipropetrovszk, Donyeck és Csernyivci megyékben.

Büntetőeljárást indított a rendőrség két, a Lemberg megyei Zsovkiszkij járásban elhunyt személy ügyében. Az információk szerint az elhunytak a járási kórház intenzív osztályán tartózkodtak, mindketten lélegeztetőgéphez voltak kötve, s egy áramkimaradás miatt vesztették életüket. A hírt a nemzeti rendőrség helyi kirendeltsége közölte.
Az eljárás során kiderült, hogy az egészségügyi intézményben november 27-én kijevi idő szerint 17.50 és 19.10 között áramkimaradás volt, s ezalatt az idő alatt halt meg a 61 és 66 éves páciens. A kórház mindemellett rendelkezik két áramfejlesztővel is, azonban az említett esetkor egyiket sem kapcsolták be.
