A gép a guatemalavárosi La Aurora nemzetközi repülőtérről indult, és röviddel a felszállást követően csapódott a földbe. A pilóta és egy utas életét vesztette, egy harmadik személyt súlyos sérülésekkel – kritikus állapotban – az egyik fővárosi kórházba szállították. A baleset oka egyelőre ismeretlen.
A vihar – óránként 235 kilométeres sebességű széllökésekkel – múlt kedden csapott le Közép-Amerikára, elsőként Nicaraguára, s súlyos károkat okozott a térség országaiban, emberek ezreit sújtotta, házakat, utakat rombolt le, terméseket tett tönkre, pusztítása nyomán többen eltűntek. Guatemalában legalább 27-en vesztették életüket és több mint százan tűntek el az ítéletidő következtében. Egy sárlavina 150 házat temetett be csütörtökön egy településen, ami vélhetően legkevesebb száz ember halálát okozta.

Az Eta nevű hurrikán – amely jelenleg Kuba, a Kajmán-szigetek és Florida felé tart – házakat, utakat rombolt le Közép-Amerikában. Több ember eltűnt, és halálos áldozatok is vannak.
Mexikóban 22-en meghaltak, további öt ember pedig eltűnt az Eta nevű hurrikán pusztítása után Chiapas és Tabasco államokban. Összesen 4280 lakás ment tönkre, a földcsuszamlások több tucat utat zártak el, 10 folyó és patak öntött ki medréből.
A hurrikán keltette áradások és földcsuszamlások 12 közösséget vágtak el a külvilágtól.
A mexikói elnök, Andrés Manuel López Obrador eközben szülőföldjére, Tabasco államba sietett, ahol a helyi polgári védelem szerint újabb két ember halt meg, mintegy 90 ezer embert ért kár, nyolcezren elmenekültek, és legalább 12 településben keletkeztek károk.
A pusztításról több videót is közzétettek a Twitteren:
Guatemalában az Eta hurrikán által okozott földcsuszamlás helyszínén, Queja faluban a hatóságok közlése szerint a sárlavina feltehetően 150 embert temetett maga alá.
A mentés a tragédia után csak egy nappal kezdődhetett el. A falu 22 kilométerre van a legközelebbi várostól, San Cristobal Verapraztól, de az odavezető út gépjárművel járhatatlanná vált, és a mentőcsapatok csak egynapos gyaloglással tudtak eljutni a katasztrófa helyszínére.
A híradások szerint akár hónapok is eltelhetnek, míg kiássák a sárlavinában rekedtek holttesteit.

A guatemalai San Lucas Tolimán nevű település elégedetlenkedő lakói felgyújtották városházát, mert a kormány nem lazította a koronavírus-járvány megfékezését szolgáló intézkedéseket – jelentette az MTI a helyi sajtó hétfői közlése nyomán.
Az épület azután kapott lángra, hogy Alejandro Giammattei elnök bejelentette, mely megyékben milyen tevékenységeket engedélyeznek ismét, a település pedig vörös készültségi fokozatban maradt, fenntartották a lezárását.
Az El Periodico nevű helyi napilap szerint az intézkedés ellen tüntetők azzal érveltek, hogy a településen csak kevés fertőzött van, majd kövekkel dobálták meg a városháza épületét, amelyet két motorkerékpárral együtt fel is gyújtottak.
A kormány annak dacára kezdte el a gazdaság újraindítását, hogy sok térségben még mindig rohamosan nő a fertőzöttek száma. A 17 millió lakosú Guatemalában eddig 45 ezer 53 fertőzöttet azonosítottak és 1734 ember halt meg a vírus miatt.

A Narco-ranching, vagyis narkólegeltetés Közép-Amerika-szerte ismert a kábítószer-kereskedelemben utazó szervezett bűnözői csoportok gyakorlata. A drogból befolyó pénzt marhartartásba fektetik be, és így mossák tisztára. Mexikóban adják el a húst, így annak eredete nagyon hamar visszakövethetetlenné válik.
A Texasi Állami Egyetem kutatóinak felmérése szerint a gyakorlat jelentős másodlagos környezeti károkat okoz. Guatemalában a természetvédelmi területeken folytatott erdőirtás 87 százalékáért a drogkartellek a felelősek, akik így szereznek maguknak illegális legelőket. A helyzet hasonló a Dél-Amerikából induló, Közép-Amerikán keresztül húzódó, és az Egyesült Államokba tartó drogcsempészfolyosó mentén.
Az esőerdő közepén kiirtott erdők helyén maradt pusztaságot nemcsak marhatartásra használják, de repülőtereket is üzemeltetnek rajtuk, ahol nyugodtan le tudnak szállni a csempészszállítmányok. A kutatók összesen 4500 légi felvételt elemeztek a 2,1 millió hektár területű Maja Bioszféra Rezervátumról, amely az ökológiai szempontból kiemelt jelentőségű Petén régióban található.
A területen már a múlt század hatvanas évei óta működnek hatalmas ranchek, mert a kormány mindig is támogatta a marhatartás fejlesztését az esőerdő rovására. A drogkartellek megjelenése a marhabizniszben viszont viszonylag új, az évezred elejére tehető. Áldásos tevékenységüknek köszönhetően 2000 és 2015 között a Laguna del Tigre Nemzeti Park (Guatemala legnagyobb nemzeti parkja) területének 30 százalékát legelővé alakították.
A kutatók elismerik, hogy nincs cáfolhatatlan bizonyítékuk arra vonatkozóan, hogy az adott illegális erdőirtás a drogcsempészek számlájára írható, viszont azzal érvelnek, hogy a terület mérete, illetve az ott folytatott, a levegőből is azonosítható tevékenység alapján megkülönböztethetők a pénzmosási céllal üzemeltetett ranchek a kis léptékben gazdálkodók tanyáitól.
