Az ügyész elmondta, hogy szándékos emberölés gyanújával indítottak nyomozást. Az áldozatok közül négy kisgyermek, az ötödik pedig az édesanyjuk.
Az őrizetbe vett férfi a gyermekek apja, aki a rendőrség szerint korábban már állt pszichiátriai kezelés alatt, és családon belüli erőszakért is nyomoztak utána, mert egyszer már rátámadt a feleségére.
A gyanúsítottat apja lakásában fogták el, a Meaux-tól mintegy 30 kilométerre található Sevranban.
Az áldozatok közül az anya 35 éves volt, a legkisebb gyermek 9 hónapos, a többiek 4, 7 és 10 évesek.
A rendőrség szerint a bűntényt késsel követték el. A hatóságokat a szomszédok riasztották, akik aggasztónak találták, hogy nem tudnak kapcsolatba lépni a család tagjaival.

New York rendőrfőnöke közölte, hogy a támadó két kiérkező rendőrt konyhakéssel sebesítette meg, akik ezt követően lelőtték. A rendőrök egyikét mellkasán, a másikat fején sebezte meg, sérüléseik nem súlyosak, ugyanakkor egy további embert, egy 61 éves nőt súlyos állapotban szállítottak kórházba.
A feltételezések szerint a 38 éves férfi az áldozatok rokona volt, aki a kora reggeli órákban jelent meg a lakóháznál Queens legdélebbi, Far Rockaway negyedében.
Jeffrey Maddrey rendőrfőnök helyi idő szerint reggel tartott sajtótájékoztatóján beszámolt arról, hogy az erőszakos incidensben egy 11 éves lány, egy 12 éves fiú, egy 44 éves nő, és egy 30-as éveiben járó férfi halt meg.
A tájékoztatás szerint a támadásról egy fiatal nő értesítette a rendőrséget kora reggel, aki azt mondta, hogy az unokatestvére gyilkolta meg családjának tagjait.
A gyanúsítottat a rendőrök a ház közelében találták meg, aki egy bőrönddel a kezében próbálta elhagyni a környéket. Miután a járőrök néhány kérdést feltettek, kiderült, hogy a tettesről van szó, aki ekkor húzta elő a nála lévő kést.
A négy halott egyikét a rendőrök az épület előtt találták meg, a többit a házban. A hatóság kiérkezésekor a lakóház nappali szobája lángokban állt, amit a tűzoltók viszonylag gyorsan megfékeztek, a többi áldozatra ezt követően bukkantak rá – hangzott el a bűncselekményről szóló sajtóértekezleten.
A rendőrfőnök hozzátette, hogy a tüzet is a támadó okozta, aki egy bútort gyújtott meg. A eddigi feltételezések szerint családi tragédia történt, de az eset vizsgálata még tart.

A felesége Vinnicja megyei lakos volt, ismerőseik szerint boldog házasságban éltek – egy ideig.
Miután Lengyelországba költöztek több hitelt is felvett és többször is látták ittas állapotban. Kihallgatása során beismerte, hogy többször is vitáztak feleségével pénzügyek miatt. Így történt ez november 13-án is. Összevesztek, majd felesége a gyerekekkel éjszakázott. A férfi berúgott, majd úgy döntött, felmegy az emeletre és megfojtja feleségét. Eközben felébredt az egyik kislány, így őt is, majd pedig másik kislányát is megfojtotta. Fia egy másik szobában aludt, nem hallott semmit. Másnap megtiltotta a fiúnak, hogy bemenjen a szobába, azt hazudta, hogy testvérei és a nő koronavírus-fertőzöttek. Négy napot töltöttek el így, majd november 18-án a férfi feladta magát a rendőrségen. Előzetes letartóztatásba helyezték, az információk szerint életfogytig tartó börtönbüntetésre számíthat.
