Irán az ukrán gép lelövése előtt néhány órával ballisztikus rakétákkal megtámadott két olyan támaszpontot Irakban, amelyet az amerikai erők és szövetségeseik használnak. Ez megtorlása volt annak, hogy az amerikai erők január 3-án dróntámadásban megölték Bagdadban Kászim Szulejmáni iráni tábornokot.

Majd Haszan Róháni elnök is közleményt írt a Twitterre: „Az Iszlám Köztársaság mélységesen sajnálja ezt a katasztrofális és megbocsáthatatlan hibát. Együtt imádkozom az összes gyászoló családdal, és őszinte részvétemet nyilvánítom nekik”. Egy másik üzenetben megerősítette, hogy az ügyben folytatódik a nemzetközi vizsgálat.
Napokig tagadták a rakétatámadást
Irán napokig tagadta, hogy rakétatalálat érte volna az ukrán repülőgépet. Az Egyesült Államok és Kanada azonban közölte: hírszerzési értesüléseik szerint valószínű, hogy Irán lőtte le az utasszállítót.
A gépen 167 utas és a kilenctagú ukrán személyzet utazott. Az utasok közül az ukrán diplomácia által megadott első adatok szerint 82 volt iráni, 63 kanadai, 10 svéd, négy afgán, három német és két brit. Kanada pénteken pontosította ezt, közölték, hogy nem 63, hanem 57 kanadai volt a gépen, de változatlanul igaz, hogy az utasok közül 138-an átszállással Kanadába mentek volna.

Ennek ellenére a tragédiát követő napon számos külföldi média és több kormányfő is azt nyilatkozta, hogy az utasszállító repülőgépet iráni katonák lőtték le.
A BBC Ukraine, továbbá megannyi amerikai portál arról számol be, hogy Irán véletlenül lelőtte az ukrán repülőgépet. Kris Van Cleave, a CBS News újságírója azt nyilatkozta, hogy az amerikai tisztviselőknek meggyőződése, hogy iráni katonák hibájából zuhant le a gép, ezt az állítást a CNN is megerősítette. Nem volt alapja annak, hogy megtiltsák a polgári légi járatok repülését Irán légterében, annak ellenére sem, hogy feszült a helyzet a térségben – jelentette ki Olekszij Honcsaruk ukrán miniszterelnök szerdai sajtótájékoztatóján, amelyet annak kapcsán tartott, hogy reggel Iránban lezuhant egy ukrán utasszállító, fedélzetén 176 személlyel.
Az eddigi információk szerint a légi szerencsétlenségnek nincs túlélője. Vadim Prisztajko ukrán külügyminiszterre hivatkozva az ukrán sajtó azt közölte, hogy a tragédiában 167 utas és a gép 9 fős ukrán személyzete vesztette életét. Még két utas volt ukrán állampolgárságú, a többiek további hat ország állampolgárai: irániak (82), kanadaiak (63), svédek (10), britek (3), afgánok (4) és németek (3). Két regisztrált utas végül nem szállt fel a járatra, róluk semmilyen információt nem hoztak nyilvánosságra. Időközben a MAU ukrán légitársaság is közzétette angol nyelven a járat utasainak és személyzetének névsorát.
Az ukrán kormányfő közölte, hogy ukrán szakértőket küldenek Iránba a repülőgép katasztrófájának felderítéséhez. Öt szakértőt küld a polgári repülési baleseteket vizsgáló nemzeti iroda, kettőt az ukrán légi közlekedési hivatal és hármat a szerencsétlenséget szenvedett járat tulajdonosa, a MAU ukrán légitársaság. Az áldozatok között 26 volt kiskorú, körülük 13-an tízévesnél fiatalabbak.
Az Ukrajinszka Pravda hírportál beszámolójában arról írt, hogy a tragédia előtt és után is zavartalanul szálltak fel-, illetve le a teheráni repülőtérről nemzetközi járatok, beleértve európai légitársaságok gépeit.
Közben Vlagyimir Putyin orosz elnök táviratban fejezte ki részvétét Volodimir Zelenszkij ukrán elnöknek és Haszan Róháni iráni államfőnek az utasszállító gép lezuhanása miatt.

The IAEA is looking into reports of an overnight attack on the construction site of a planned nuclear power plant in Darkhovin, Iran. The facility is in the very early stages of construction and contained no nuclear material when last visited by the IAEA.
A Teherán mellett szerda reggel lezuhant ukrán utasszállító gép katasztrófáját az előzetes információk szerint hajtóműhiba okozta – közölte Ukrajna teheráni nagykövetsége, amely szerint jelenleg kizárható az, hogy terrorcselekmény vagy rakétatámadás okozta a tragédiát.
Korábban az Al Hadath jordániai hetilap forrásmegjelölés nélkül közölte, hogy az iráni légvédelem lőtte le tévedésből a gépet. Ezt semmilyen más forrás nem erősítette meg, nyugati hírügynökségek sem vették át az újság információit.
Vaszilj Kirilics, az ukrán külügyminisztérium konzuli osztályának helyettes vezetője megerősítette, hogy az előzetes információk alapján a MAU ukrán légitársaság Teheránnál lezuhant járatának nincs túlélője, minden utas és a teljes személyzet is életét vesztette a katasztrófában.
Vadim Prisztajko ukrán külügyminiszter közölte a Twitteren, hogy 176-an haltak meg a katasztrófában, közülük 82-en irániak, 63-an kanadaiak, 11-en ukránok – a kilencfős személyzettel együtt –, tízen svájciak, négyen pedig afganisztáni, illetve hárman-hárman német és brit állampolgárok.
A katasztrófa miatt Volodimir Zelenszkij ukrán államfő megszakította ománi látogatását és visszaindult Kijevbe. Utasítására az RNBO operatív törzset hozott létre, amelynek tagja a többi között a kormányfő, a külügyminiszter, a védelmi és a belügyi tárca vezetője.
Az ukrán elnök Facebook-bejegyzésében arra kért mindenkit, hogy tartózkodjon a spekulációktól és a nem megerősített információk közlésétől. Mint írta, személyes ellenőrzése alatt tart minden intézkedést. Közölte, hogy a külügyminisztérium elkészíti az utasok listáját, amit hamarosan nyilvánosságra hoznak. Jelenleg a teheráni Khomeini Imám repülőtéren tartózkodik Ukrajna iráni nagykövete és konzulja.

néhány utast” – mondta az állami televíziónak Pirhuszein Kulivand, az iráni
mentőszolgálatok vezetője.
Az iráni polgári légiközlekedési hatóság egyik szóvivője a
médiajelentésekkel szemben 170 utasról beszélt a televízióban.
A légijáratokat követő Flightradar szolgáltatás adatai alapján a Kijevbe induló, 752-es számú járatnak a menetrend szerint hajnali 5 óra 15 perckor kellett volna felszállnia Teheránból, a járat indítása azonban majdnem egy órát késett, és a gép 6:12-kor emelkedett a magasba.
