A sofőrrel együtt 35-en tartózkodtak a buszon. A sofőr Katagum város környékén elvesztette uralmát a jármű felett, miután a busz defektet kapott. A beszámoló szerint az irányíthatatlanná vált busz ezután többször megpördült, végül egy fának csapódott.

A baleset az Atlanti-óceán partján fekvő Rivers államban található Rumuekpében történt. Helyi források szerint az áldozatok száma tovább emelkedhet.
