Az ügyészség korrupcióért is felelősségre akarta vonni Sócratest, de Ivo Rosa, az illetékes portugál legfelső büntetőtörvényszék bírája úgy döntött, hogy a vádak ellentmondásossága, megalapozatlansága, valamint az elévülés ezt nem teszi lehetővé.

Sócratest, aki 2005 és 2011 között szolgált Portugália miniszterelnökeként, a lisszaboni repülőtéren vették őrizetbe 2014 novemberében Portugália eddig legnagyobb – Marquis fedőnevű – korrupcióellenes nyomozása keretében. Ez volt az első eset az ország történetében, hogy egy volt miniszterelnököt őrizetbe vettek.
A több mint 4000 oldalas vádirat szerint Sócratest három rendbeli hivatali vesztegetéssel, 16 rendbeli pénzmosással, kilenc rendbeli okirathamisítással és háromrendbeli adócsalással gyanúsítják. Úgy tudni, a bűncselekményeket 2006 és 2015 között követte el.
A dokumentum szerint több millió eurós vagyonhoz jutva kulcsfontosságú szerepet játszott egy csalásban, amelyben az Espirito Santo bankbirodalom, illetve a Portugal Telecom távközlési vállalat egykori vezetői is érintettek voltak.
Mindkét vállalkozás időközben megszűnt, eurómilliárdos veszteségeket okozva az adófizetőknek és a részvényeseknek is, az egykori vezetőket pedig különböző bűncselekményekkel gyanúsítják, ellenük nyomozás indult.
A szociáldemokrata politikus ártatlannak vallja magát, az eljárást pedig politikailag motiváltnak tartja.

Ma Portugália ékes példája a COVID-19 esetek rekord számú növekedésének, mivel a karácsonyi ünnepek miatt enyhítették a karantén intézkedéseket.
