A hatóságok hétfői beszámolója szerint harmincnyolc ember vesztette életét Pakisztán több régióját sújtó heves esőzések és a velük járó villámlások miatt.
A legtöbb áldozatot – négy halottat és öt sérültet – az északi Pandzsáb tartományból jelentették, őket a helyi katasztrófavédelem szerint villámcsapás sújtotta.
A pénteken kezdődött heves esőzésekben már 21 embert csapott agyon villámlás – tették hozzá pandzsábi hatósági források.
A szintén északi Hajbar-Pahtunkva tartományból három halottról és ugyanennyi sérültről tudni, és áldozatokat jelentettek a délnyugati Beludzsisztán tartományból is.
A Pakisztáni Meteorológiai Intézet (PMD) közölte, hogy hétfőre a csapadék mennyisége csökkent.
Pakisztánt az éghajlatváltozás kiemelten sújtja, az esőzések különösen a monszunidőszak idején rendkívül nagy károkat okoznak országszerte. A jelenség leginkább a gyengébben megépített infrastruktúrát és a vályogházakat fenyegeti.
Az országban 2022-ben a megszokottnál hevesebb esőzéseket hozó monszun okozta áradások hatalmas területeket öntöttek el, és csaknem 1700 halálos áldozatot követeltek. A rekordmennyiségű monszuneső és az északi hegyekből lezúduló heves gleccserolvadás nyomán kialakult árvíz a 220 milliós lakosságból 33 millió embert érintett. Az ár több ezer kilométernyi utat és 440 hidat mosott el, valamint megrongálta az ország vízhálózatát is.

A konzervatív iszlám országban az ENSZ adatai szerint csupán a nők 21 százaléka dolgozik és a vidéken élő lánygyermekek kevesebb mint 20 százaléka jut el a középiskoláig.
Jóllehet a 336 tagú pakisztáni parlamentben 60 képviselői hely van fenntartva nők számára, a februári választásokon csupán 12-en kerültek be a törvényhozásba.

Legalább 24 ember vesztette életét szerdán két, választási irodáknál történt pokolgépes merényletben Pakisztán Beludzsisztán tartományában, miközben csütörtökön parlamenti választásokat tartanak az országban. A hatóságok válaszul korlátozzák az internetet és felfüggesztik a mobilszolgáltatást.
A legutóbbi, 2018-as választáson az Imran Hán vezette, ellenzéki Pakisztáni Mozgalom az Igazságosságért (PTI) 116 mandátumot szerzett a parlamentben. A politikust 2022-ben buktatták meg és a napokban ítélték 14 évnyi börtönbüntetésre korrupció miatt. Elemzők szerint Hán megbuktatása hátterében az országot ténylegesen irányító hadsereg áll.
A parlamentet 2023 augusztusában négy nappal megbízatásának lejárta előtt oszlatták fel, az alkotmány értelmében a választásokat az ezt követő 90 napon belül meg kellett volna tartani, de a 2023-as népszámlálás utáni új választókerületek megrajzolása miatt erre csak újabb három hónappal később kerülhet sor.
A választás vélhetően a Pakisztáni Néppárt és a Pakisztáni Muzulmán Liga–Navaz között dől el. Mivel Pakisztán 40 százaléka írástudatlan, így a szimbólumok használatának nagy jelentősége van. A PTI politizálását megnehezítette, hogy jelöltjei nem használhatták a szavazólapon a krikettütőt, a párt börtönbe zárt egykori vezetője ugyanis híres krikettjátékos volt.

Fegyveresek ütöttek rajta egy rendőrőrsön a Pakisztán északnyugati részén lévő Hajbar-Pahtúnhva tartományban hétfő hajnalban, legkevesebb 10 rendőr meghalt, hatan megsebesültek – közölték rendőrségi források.
Ahtar Haját Gandapur tartományi rendőrfőnök azt mondta, a támadásban mintegy 30 terrorista vett részt, és a rajtaütés nyomán több mint két órán át tartó tűzharc bontakozott ki.
A támadók a tájékoztatás szerint rakétákat, lőfegyvereket és kézigránátokat is használtak az akció során.

Államtitkok kiadása miatt tíz-tíz évi börtönbüntetésre ítélte kedden egy pakisztáni bíróság Imran Hán volt kormányfőt és pártjának egyik alelnökét – írja az MTI. Imran Hánt korábban egy másik ügyben három évre ítélték el, és már a börtönbüntetését tölti.
Az újabb bírósági ítéletet így egy Ravalpindiben lévő börtönben hirdették ki a Pakisztáni Mozgalom az Igazságosságért (Tehrik-i-Inszáf, PTI) párt szóvivője szerint.
Imran Hán 2018 és 2022 között volt Pakisztán miniszterelnöke. 2022 áprilisában bizalmatlansági szavazás után távozott a posztjáról. A népszerű ellenzéki politikust tavaly augusztusban korrupció vádjával ítélte háromévi börtönbüntetésre a bíróság, és a közügyek gyakorlásától is eltiltották.
Lemondatása óta Hán ellen több mint 150 bírósági eljárás indult, többek között értékes állami ajándékok eltulajdonításával is megvádolták. Börtönbüntetése miatt nem jelöltethette magát a február 8-ra kiírt parlamenti választásokon, amelyeket azért rendeznek meg, mert tavaly ősszel lemondott a kormány, és feloszlatták a parlamentet. Az alkotmány szerint ilyen esetben előrehozott választásokat kell tartani az országban.
Hán a kedden kihirdetett ítéletről azt mondta, hogy szerinte politikai ellenfelei ennek révén is biztosítani akarják, hogy sokáig ne indulhasson választáson. A pakisztáni független emberi jogi bizottság szerint csekély esély van a szabad és igazságos parlamenti választásokra a jövő hónapban.

A légicsapásoknak a megtámadott iráni Szisztán-Beludzsisztán tartomány kormányzóhelyettese szerint legkevesebb hét halálos áldozatuk volt.
A megtorló pakisztáni légicsapásokra azt követően került sor, hogy a szomszédos Irán kedden drón- és rakétacsapásokat mért a Dzsais al-Adl dzsihadista szervezet két fontos pakisztáni bázisára, és a támadásban két gyermek életét vesztette.
Az Irán és az Egyesült Államok által is terrorszervezetnek tekintett, szunnita militánsokból álló Dzsais al-Adl korábban több délkelet-iráni merénylet elkövetőjeként is jelentkezett. A szélsőséges csoport az iráni Szisztán-Beludzsisztán tartomány függetlenségéért küzd. Azon a területen az emberek többsége az iszlám szunnita ágát követi, miközben Irán a síita iszlám központja.
A pakisztáni külügyminisztérium közleménye szerint a csütörtöki támadás rendkívül összehangolt és célzott, precíziós katonai csapások sorozata volt. A közleményben hangsúlyozták, hogy a támadást egy tervezett nagyszabású terrorista akcióról szerzett értesülést követően hajtották végre Pakisztán biztonságának megvédése érdekében.
Az iráni Szisztán-Beludzsisztán tartomány kormányzóhelyettese, Ali Reza Marhamati elmondta, hogy a csütörtöki légicsapásoknak több halálos áldozatuk volt. Pontos számukat nem közölte, csak azt, hogy három nő és négy gyermek is meghalt. Az áldozatok nem irániak voltak – mondta.
A pakisztáni támadást követően az iráni állami televízió egy névtelenül nyilatkozó tisztviselőre hivatkozva közölte, hogy Teherán határozottan elítélte a támadást, és azonnali magyarázatot követelt Pakisztántól.
Pakisztán Beludzsisztán tartománya, valamint a szomszédos Irán Szisztán-Beludzsisztán tartománya több mint két évtizede küzd a lázadó beludzs csoportokkal.
