A szemtanúk beszámolói szerint a férfi előzőleg jegyért könyörgött, miután lekéste a vonatát. Amikor telefonon összeveszett a feleségével, elővette a magánál tartott gyúlékony anyagot, és meggyújtotta.
A rendőrség szerint a férfi ittas lehetett. Továbbra sem világos, hogyan jutott be gyúlékony anyaggal a repülőtér területére, de feltételezések szerint egy közeli benzinkútról szerezhette.
