A 28 éves Reed az ügyiratok szerint tavaly augusztusban ittasan hangos szóváltásba keveredett két nővel az orosz fővárosban, majd agresszívan lépett fel a helyszínre kiszálló rendőrökkel szemben, és az előállítási kísérletnek is ellenállt. Az őrszobára szállítás közben hátulról megragadta a járőrkocsi vezetőjét, amivel balesetveszélyes helyzetet idézett elő, és könyökkel megütötte annak társát is. A tárgyaláson Reed nem ismerte el bűnösségét, azt állítva, hogy nem emlékszik a történtekre, mert részeg volt. Az elítélt tavaly májusban az orosz barátnője miatt és nyelvtanulási céllal költözött Oroszországba. Amerikai kommentárok szerint a súlyos ítélet összefüggésben állhat egy készülő orosz–amerikai fogolycserével. Azt feltételezve, hogy politikai indíttatású verdikt született Moszkvában, emlékeztetettek rá, hogy júniusban kémkedés címén 16 évre ítélték Paul Whelant, egy autóalkatrészgyártó michigani cég biztonsági vezetőjét, aki szintén az amerikai tengerészgyalogságnál szolgált, és hogy csalás gyanújával tavaly óta házi őrizetben tartják Michael Calvey amerikai befektetőt.
