 Az angliai West Midlands nagyvárosi megye rendőrei nemrég azért csaptak le egy bitcoinfarmra, mert azt gondolták, hogy ott illegális tevékenység, egész pontosan marihuánatermesztés zajlik. Persze nem arról van szó, hogy a rendőrök ne tudnák megkülönböztetni a füvet a kriptovalutától: a létesítmény illegálisan jutott áramhoz, az egyenruhások pedig emiatt gondolták, hogy a kábítószer állhat a háttérben.
 A rendőrök azt mondták, azután ütöttek rajta az épületen, hogy több helyről is azt hallották, nagyon sokan keresik fel az adott helyiséget. Ezután egy drónt küldtek a sandwelli ipari park egyik létesítményéhez, amely azt mutatta, ott valóban van egy nagy hőforrás.
 Az egyenruhások a rajtaütéskor szembesültek azzal, hogy a létesítményben a kannabisz helyett nagyjából 100 számítógép működik. Ezeket lefoglalták, miután az üzemeltetőkről kiderült, hogy több ezer font értékben loptak áramot a bitcoinfarm működtetéséhez. A razzia során senkit nem találtak az épületben, de annak tulajdonosával fel fogják venni a kapcsolatot.
 Bár a bitcoin bányászata nem illegális tevékenység az Egyesült Királyságban, az áramlopás az. És miután a bűncselekményből bevétele származott az üzemeltetőnek, a számítógépeket végérvényesen lefoglalta a hatóság.
