A 69 esztendős, nős, ötgyermekes Amess, aki csaknem négy évtizedig volt a brit Konzervatív Párt alsóházi frakciójának tagja, péntek délután éppen képviselői fogadóórát tartott délkelet-angliai választókörzetében, az Essex megyei Leigh-on-Sea kisvárosban, amikor egy férfi, aki az utcáról tért be, késsel többször megszúrta.
