A tengeri mentőcsapatot vasárnap reggel hét órakor riasztották a helyszínre, miután több bejelentés is érkezett a Lewis-szigeten bajba jutott állatokról. Az első jelentések 55 kifejlett felnőtt és borjú partra vetődéséről számoltak be, de nem sokkal később kiderült, hogy közülük mindössze tizenöten élték túl a szárazra kerülést.
A mentőcsapat megpróbált két aktívabb, a kevésbé sekély vízben ragadt delfint újra vízre tenni, de csak az egyiküket sikerült megmenteniük.
A másik és további három delfin később elpusztult. A brit szervezet állatmentői végül úgy döntöttek, hogy humanitárius okokból elaltatják a még élő állatokat.
A partra vetődés oka egyelőre nem ismert, de úgy gondolják, hogy a delfincsorda talán az egyik nőstényt követte.
„Ezek a tengeri emlősök híresek erős közösségi kötelékeikről, ezért gyakran ha egyikük bajba kerül és elakad, a többi is követi” – tették hozzá.
A parti őrség, a skót tűzoltóság és mentőszolgálat, a rendőrség valamint a bálnák és delfinek pusztulását vizsgáló SMASS (Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme) szintén a helyszínen volt a vasárnap.

A delfinek elpusztulásának fő oka az, hogy az orosz hajók szonárokat használnak. Sok hadihajó manőverez a Fekete-tenger délnyugati részén, beleértve a tengeralattjárókat is, amelyek néha körülbelül 100 méter távolságra közelítik meg a partot.
„Mindezek a felszíni és tengeralattjáró hajók nagyon erős hangjelzéseket adnak, amelyek zavarták a delfineket. Minden cetféle, a bálnák és a delfinek visszhangmeghatározó „eszközt” használnak. Napra pontosan két évvel korábban, 2020. szeptember 21-én 470 hosszúszárnyú gömbölyűfejű delfin vetődött partra szintén a Macquarie-öbölben. Az állatok közül 111-et sikerült megmenteni, a többi elpusztult. Ez volt a legsúlyosabb ilyen eset Ausztráliában.
A hatóságok akkoriban nem szállították el a tetemeket a partról. Azonban a bomlási folyamat a vártnál sokkal tovább tartott, így sokáig elviselhetetlen volt a bűz a környéken – mondta el Brendon Clark helyi illetékes.
Szerdán mintegy 230 gömbölyűfejű delfin feneklett meg a Macquarie-öböl partjainál. Aznap az állatok fele még életben volt, de másnap reggel már csak harminckettőt sikerült megmenteni az esetenként 2,5 tonnás cetek közül.
A megmentett delfinek közül kettő elpusztult, miután nyolc társukkal együtt visszatértek a sekély vízbe. Ez a mentést nehezítő viselkedés tipikusnak mondható a gömbölyűfejű delfineknél, amelyek nagyon szociális lények. Tömeges partra vetődéseknél gyakran előfordul, hogy a túlélők visszaúsznak hátrahagyott társaikért.

Romániából és Bulgáriából szintén jelentettek hasonló eseteket, a szakemberek a hadi tilalom miatt viszont nem tudják felmérni a partszakaszokat, így az elpusztult állatok száma jóval nagyobb is lehet.

Az elpusztult tengeri állatokra a nyugat-afrikai ország atlanti-óceáni partvidékének három különböző térségében bukkantak a hét végén – értesült az MTI.
„Mintegy 60 elpusztult delfint és számos kis halfajt számláltunk meg csak itt ezen a strandon. Nagyon szokatlan eset, és nem tudjuk, mi történt” – közölte Samuel Obeng, a Nyugati Térségben lévő Aximban élő halász a helyi sajtóval. -„Nagyon ritka, hogy ilyen nagy számban sodródjanak partra döglött halak” – jegyezte meg.
Az ország halászati bizottságának illetékesei közölték, hogy mintákat vettek a tetemekből laboratóriumi vizsgálatokra.
Michael Arthur-Dadzie vezérigazgató közleménye szerint első vizsgálódásaikban nem találtak semmilyen sérülést, horzsolást a tetemeken. A vízből is mintákat vettek, hogy meg tudják állapítani az állatok pusztulásának az okát.„A tengervíz szín és hőmérséklete normális” – fűzte hozzá.

Mozambik környezetvédelmi minisztériuma közölte, hogy vasárnap 25, majd kedden további 85 döglött delfinre bukkantak Bazaruto-sziget nyugati partvidékén. A Mozambiki-csatornán, a szárazföld és Madagaszkár közti szorosban fekvő sziget része a Bazaruto Nemzeti Parknak, az afrikai ország első védett tengeri övezetének.
Egyelőre nem tudni, hogy mi okozta a tömeges delfinpusztulást, az állatokon nem látszik semmiféle sérülés nyoma, és az első vizsgálatok az emésztőrendszerükben sem mutattak ki olyan anyagot, amely a halálukat okozhatta.
A hat tagból álló Bazaruto-szigetek védett övezete sokféle tengeri emlősnek, köztük delfineknek, bálnáknak és dugongoknak (a tengeritehenek egyik családjának) ad otthont, de élőhelye 180-féle madárnak, 45 hüllőfajnak, 16-féle szárazföldi emlősnek, 500 tengerparti fajnak és 2000-féle halnak is.

A bálnák még csütörtökön akadtak el a tengerparton. A hirtelen összeverbuválódott önkéntesek megpróbálták őket visszatolni a vízbe, de nem igazán jártak sikerrel. Sőt a három kimentett delfin közül is volt olyan, amelyik visszafordult a biztos halál felé, mert az édesanyja még a parton rekedt.

Legtöbbjük még a hétvégén vetődött partra, a mentőegységek munkáját nehezítette, hogy a szigetek mindentől távol vannak.
A környezetvédelmi hatóság közlése szerint 97 gömbölyűfejű delfin és három palackorrú delfin pusztult el a partra vetődés következtében. A mentőegységeket vasárnap értesítették az esetről.
„Akkor már csak 26 delfin volt életben, többségük nagyon gyengének tűnt. Őket elaltatták a kegyetlen tengeri körülmények miatt, és mivel szinte biztosan nagy fehér cápák várták őket odakint, amelyeket egy ilyen tömeges partra vetődés mindig a környékre vonz” – mondta Jemma Welch, a környezetvédelmi hatóság szakértője.
A tömeges partra vetődések meglehetősen gyakoriak a Chatham-szigeteken, 1918-ban egyetlen ilyen eset során mintegy ezer állat pusztult el. Egyelőre a tengerbiológusok nem tudják, pontosan mi idézi elő ezeket.
Szeptember végén több száz delfin pusztult el Ausztrália partjainak sekély vizeiben a világ egyik legnagyobb tömeges delfinpusztulása során.
