 Fernando Villavicencio ecuadori elnökjelölt éppen egy quitói kampányrendezvényről távozott, néhány nappal a választás előtt, amelynek központi témája az ország erőszakba és bűnözésbe való csúszása. A közösségi médiában közzétett felvételek szerint a politikust biztonsági őrök kísérték ki az autójához, amikor lövések dördültek.
 A The Guardian beszámolója szerint az ország elnöke, Guillermo Lasso „felháborodott és megdöbbent a gyilkosságon”, ami miatt a  biztonsági kabinetjét is összehívja. „Biztosítom önöket, hogy ez a bűncselekmény nem marad büntetlenül” – mondta az elnök.
 A főügyészség később közölte, hogy a gyilkosság egyik gyanúsítottja belehalt az elfogásához vezető lövöldözésben szerzett sérüléseibe.

 Ecuadorban az utóbbi időben megugrott az erőszakos bűncselekmények száma. A rivális kábítószer-kereskedő bandák börtönmészárlásokat követnek el, és a gyilkosságok száma 2020 és 2022 között több mint kétszeresére nőtt. 
 Lasso a szerdai gyilkosságot követően elmondta, „a szervezett bűnözés túl messzire ment, de meg fogják érezni a törvény súlyát”.
 Villavicencio egyike volt annak a nyolc elnökjelöltnek, akik az augusztus 20-án tartandó előrehozott választásokon indulnak. Az 59 éves politikus néhány nappal a meggyilkolása előtt az országos televízióban azt állította, hogy több halálos fenyegetést is kapott, amelyek szerinte a Choneros banda bebörtönzött vezetőjétől, „Alias Fito”-tól érkeztek.
