Több százan voltak a helyszínen, amikor egyik pillanatról a másikra összeomlott a mecset. Nigéria északi részén, a Kaduna államban található Zaria városában történt a tragédia, a halottak mellett sérültek is vannak.
Pénteken, a városi központban tartottak délutáni imát, miközben rájuk omlott az épület. Kezdetben négy holttestet találtak, majd további háromra bukkantak, rajtuk sem lehetett már segíteni.
Helyi tisztviselők szerint az 1830-as években építették a mecsetet, ami feltehetően már nem volt jó állapotban. Az Al Jazeera azt írja, 23 embert kórházba szállítottak, állapotuk nem ismert.
Kaduna állam kormányzója, Uba Sani azonnali vizsgálatot rendelt el a tragédia ügyében, és ígéretet tett arra, segítséget nyújt az incidensben érintetteknek. A nyugat-afrikai országban az elmúlt évben több mint egy tucat épületomlásról számoltak be.
A hatóságok az ehhez hasonló katasztrófákért gyakran okolják a tisztviselőket, akik nem tartják be az építésbiztonsági előírásokat, valamint rosszul végzik a karbantartást, és nem megfelelő építőanyagokat használnak.
