Több mint ötven ember vesztette életét etnikai csoportok közötti összecsapásokban India északkeleti részén – jelentette a Kathpress osztrák katolikus hírügynökség vasárnap indiai egészségügyi forrásokra hivatkozva.
A szemben álló csoportok közötti erőszak péntek esti újbóli fellángolása nyomán szombaton sem csillapodott a feszültség a térségben.
A 2,9 milliós Manipur állam lakóinak 53 százaléka tartozik a hindu meitei népcsoporthoz, a népesség többi része különböző helyi törzsekből tevődik össze. A 2011-es népszámlálás adatai szerint a szövetségi államban a legnagyobb felekezeteket a hinduk és a keresztények alkották, utóbbiak között a katolikusok mintegy 100 ezer fővel kisebbségnek számítanak.
