Ausztrália északkeleti részén történt a halálos baleset hétfőn, amiben a pilóta életét vesztette. Több felvételen is az látszik, ahogyan nagy lángok csapnak fel az épület tetőrészében a lezuhant helikopter miatt.
A Hilton egyik szállodájáról van szó, amit több száz embernek kellett elhagynia. Éjjel 1 óra 50 perc körül történt a tragédia, melynek körülményei egyelőre nem teljesen ismertek. A helikopter propellerének egyes darabjai a szálloda medencéjében landoltak, de a pilótán kívül más nem vesztette életét.
Az AFP azt írja, a helikopter rendkívül alacsonyan repült, míg a jelzőfény nem égett. Arra gyanakodnak, hogy a pilóta hibájából történt a tragédia, aki szabálytalanul repült és szó szerint nekicsapódott az épületnek. A gép ekkor felrobbant és teljesen kiégett, esélye sem lehetett a túlélésre a pilótának, aki egyedül tartózkodott a helikopteren.
Két embert viszont füstmérgezés miatt kórházba szállítottak, akik közvetlen a robbanás közelében tartózkodtak. A CNA szerint a tetőtüzet csak reggelre sikerült eloltaniuk a tűzoltóknak, jelentős lehet az anyagi kár.
Az Ausztrál Közlekedésbiztonsági Iroda biztosa, Angus Mitchell azt mondta, a körülmények trükkösek voltak a baleset idején, a rossz látási viszonyok és az eső is hatással lehetett a balesetre.
