A finn külügyminisztérium kellemetlennek nevezte az esetet, és megjegyezte, hogy „komolyan veszik”.
Az Åland-szigetek Finnországon belül autonóm, demilitarizált és semleges státusszal rendelkezik. A szigetek demilitarizálásáról és semlegesítéséről szóló 1921-es genfi egyezményt az oroszok részvétele nélkül fogadták el, így az Oroszországi Föderáció soha nem ismerte el a szigetek státuszát.
