A Konzervatív Párt vezette előző brit kormány 2016-ban döntött a brit nukleáris csapásmérő erőt hordozó tengeralattjáró-flotta megújításáról, és a döntést annak idején a londoni alsóház nagy többséggel – a jelenleg kormányzó Munkáspárt támogatásával – jóváhagyta.
A négy tengeralattjáróból álló kötelék lecserélése az akkori előirányzat alapján 31 milliárd fontba kerül, és a program költségvetése 10 milliárd font tartalékot is tartalmaz.
A jelenlegi brit atomtengeralattjáró-flotta első egységét 1994-ben bocsátották vízre; az új flotta várhatóan a 2030-as években áll teljes számban hadrendbe.
A tengeralattjárók egyenként 16 Trident rakétát hordozhatnak; ezek mindegyike nyolc nukleáris robbanófejjel szerelhető fel. A brit nukleáris ütőerőt hordozó tengeralattjárók közül legalább egy mindig járőrözik a világóceán mélyén, de a brit kormány soha nem fedi fel, hogy éppen merre jár.

A lítium akkumulátorokat gyártó Aricell hvaszongi gyárában helyi idő szerint délelőtt 10 óra 30 perc körül csaptak föl a lángok – tette hozzá a Hvaszong városi tűzoltóság.
Kim Dzsinjong helyi tűzoltó televíziós sajtótájékoztatóján arról számolt be, hogy a hatóságok két embert súlyos sérülésekkel kórházba szállítottak, további öt dolgozót pedig még mindig keresnek.
Kim elmondása szerint az eltűnt emberek nagy része külföldi állampolgár, főleg kínai vendégmunkás. Hozzátette: összesen 102 ember tartózkodott a gyárban a tűz kezdetekor.
A hatóságok kiemelték, hogy a lítium akkumulátorok miatt hagyományos módszerekkel nehézséget okoz a tűz eloltása, ezért nagy az esélye annak, hogy további áldozatok lesznek.
A tűz oka egyelőre ismeretlen, az oltási munkálatok továbbra is folynak.
A hatóságok szerint az akkumulátorok – amelyekből legalább 35 ezer található a gyárban – a tűz hatására sorozatban fölrobbantak, tovább terjesztve a lángokat, illetve akadályozva a tűzoltókat a bennrekedt emberek kimentésében.
A gyár környékét ellepték a robbanásokból származó törmelékek, a háromemeletes vasbeton épület felsőbb szintjei súlyosan megrongálódtak.
A dél-koreai kormány az eset kapcsán rendkívüli megbeszélést tartott.
