Több mint kétezer embert vettek őrizetbe pénteken Észak-Indiában illegális gyermekházasságok elleni razziákon – közölte a rendőrség.
Az ENSZ adatai szerint Indiában több mint 220 millió kiskorú feleség él, de a gyermekházasságok száma jelentősen csökkent a század eleje óta. Asszám államban kéthetes razziasorozatba kezdtek a hatóságok, és ez az állam főminiszterének, Himanta Biszva Szarmának a felhívásával kezdődött, amelyben ő a közösség segítségét kérte a „káros gyakorlat” megszüntetéséhez.
Szarma szerint Asszámban szinte minden nyolcadik nő a 18. életéve előtt esik teherbe, ami jelentősen növeli a gyermekek és az anyák halálozási rátáját. GP Szingh, az állami rendőrség főigazgatója bejelentette, hogy 2044 embert vettek őrizetbe, közöttük ötvenkét pap és helyi vezető volt, akik lehetővé tették a gyermeklányok házasságkötését.
Szingh elmondta, hogy a lányokat már 12 éves korukban felnőtt férfiakhoz adják feleségül. A rendőrség 4074 olyan esetet tárt fel, amelyek vizsgálatot igényelnek.
Indiában 18 éves kortól engedélyezett a házasságkötés, de ma is több millió gyermeket kényszerítenek ennél fiatalabb korban házasságra, főként a szegény falvakban.
Az ilyen házasság következményei nagyon károsak lehetnek, mert a lányoknak abba kell hagyniuk a tanulást, hogy főzzenek és ellássák a háztartást a férjük mellett, és gyakran szenvednek a kamaszkori terhesség okozta egészségügyi problémáktól is. 2017-ben az indiai legfelsőbb bíróság megállapította, hogy kiskorúval fenntartott nemi kapcsolat akkor is nemi erőszaknak minősül, ha a pár házas.
