A 43 éves Deivid Soarest két nappal azután mentették meg, hogy a csónakját az óceánon sodródva megtalálták – írja a BBC. A férfi december 25-én egyedül indult el a Rio de Janeiro állam északi részén található Atafona partról halászni, de a vízbe esett. Később azt mondta, fizikailag az első tíz perc volt a legnehezebb számára, mert mindenáron vissza akart jutni a csónakhoz, ám a sodrás túl erős volt, és nem tudta utolérni. Miután rájött, hogy nem fog tudni visszajutni, levette az ingét és a nadrágját, mivel azok lehúzták, és inkább hagyta magát sodródni.
Négy óra elteltével elérte az Açu kikötője közelében lévő jelzőbóját, amelyre felmászott. „Azt hittem, hogy meghalok a hidegtől, mielőtt a segítség megérkezne” – idézte fel.
