 A gyilkosságokat a hatóságok szerint az Iszlám Állam terrorszervezet helyi ágának (Iszlám Állam Nyugat-afrikai Tartomány, ISWAP) fegyveresei követték el két faluban, közel a csádi határhoz. Az egyik településen a szélsőségesek jószágaikat legeltető 18 pásztorral végeztek, majd egy másik településen további hét embert öltek meg.
 Az egyik szemtanú arról számolt be, hogy az iszlamisták lefejezték áldozataikat, és egyetlen lövést sem adtak le, nehogy felhívják magukra a biztonsági erők figyelmét.
 Nigéria északkeleti részében 2009 óta aktív a Boko Haram terrorszervezet, az erőszakcselekmények pedig fokozódtak azóta, hogy 2016-ban a szervezetről levált az ISWAP, és fokozatosan a régió legerősebb dzsihadista csoportjává vált. Hatósági összesítések szerint a két csoport összesen több mint 350 ezer embert gyilkolt meg, az erőszakcselekmények miatt pedig milliók menekültek el otthonaikból. Az emberek zöme Nigéria más részein keresett menedéket, de az ENSZ és a nigériai kormány adatai szerint sokan közülük a szomszédos országok felé vették az irányt.
