 A 22 éves férfi korábban elismerte bűnösségét nemzeti védelmi információk megszerzése és szándékos továbbítása vádjában az Egyesült Államok kémkedésről szóló törvénye (Espionage Act) alapján.
 
 A Massachusettsi Nemzeti Gárda légi egységénél szolgáló Jack Teixera munkája során jutott a minősített iratokhoz, amelyeket a Discord internetes fórum zárt közösségének tagjaival osztott meg, ahonnan nyilvánosságra kerültek. Letartóztatása előtt 14 hónapon keresztül tett közzé dokumentumokat.
 Az ügyészség a kiszabható maximális, 17 év börtönbüntetést kérte arra hivatkozva, hogy Teixera az amerikai történelem legjelentősebb és legkomolyabb következményekkel járó törvénysértését követte el a kémkedésről szóló törvény hatálya alatt, és megszegte hazája, valamint az ország titkainak védelméről szóló esküjét.
 A védők 11 év börtönbüntetést kezdeményeztek, elismerve, hogy ügyfelük bűncselekménye súlyos következményt érdemel, és azt is hangsúlyozták, hogy Teixera készen áll elfogadni a kiszabott büntetést. Ugyanakkor arra hivatkoztak, hogy védencük elismerte teljes felelősségét tettének helytelenségét illetően.
 Jack Teixera informatikusként szolgált a Nemzeti Gárda légibázisának hírszerző egységében Massachusetts államban, és katonai kommunikációs hálózatok felügyeletéért volt felelős.
