Megrázó hírek láttak napvilágot a távoli Dél-Afrikából, Johannesburgból. A jelentések szerint eddig legkevesebb 52 áldozatról tudni, akik nem élték túl a johannesburgi lángokat, melyek egy többemeletes épületben csaptak fel.
A Sky News azt írja, hogy Dél-Afrika legnagyobb városában a halottak mellett több tucatnyian megsérültek a tűzvészben. Robert Mulaudzi, a katasztrófavédelmi szolgálat szóvivője azt mondta, a keresési és mentési művelet jelenleg is folyamatban van.
A hatóságok arról jelentettek, hogy a tüzet javarészt eloltották, de a csúnyán megégett épület ablakaiból még mindig füst szivárog. Egyelőre nem ismertek a tűz okai, és lehetnek még újabb halálos áldozatok.

Legalább 34 járműben keletkezett kár, voltak, amiket egymásra dobott a detonáció. Ezen a videón látszik is az apokaliptikus jelenet, amint a szerda esti csúcsban megtörténik a robbanás, levegőbe repítve a parkoló autókat és feltörve az útburkolatokat: Egy szemtanú a beszámolójában arról beszélt, hogy az autójában ült, amikor nagy robajt hallott. Ezután a levegőbe repült, az autója pedig felborult.
Hogy pontosan mi okozhatta a robbanást, az egyelőre tisztázatlan. Az érintett gázszolgáltató állítja, hogy hogy nem a földalatti vezetékekkel volt probléma (ahogy azt a hatóságok először feltételezték). A vizsgálat – szakértők bevonásával – még folyamatban van. Szerda este többeket evakuáltak a területről épületomlásoktól tartva, illetve attól, hogy további robbanás is bekövetkezhet. A mentőalakulatok éjszakába nyúlóan kutattak sérültek után, ekkor találták meg az eset (eddig) egyetlen áldozatát is.
Panyaza Lesufi, a tartomány miniszterelnöke arról beszélt, hogy még mindig keresik a szerencsétlenség forrását, illetve azt is elmondta, hogy a sérültek közül tizenkettőt még a város kórházaiban ápolnak, a többieket már hazaengedték.
