The governor has also sadly confirmed he believes that number will grow as the day progresses and searches continue.
„Úgy véljük, hogy ez a szám még növekedni fog” – mondta Andy Beshear helyi kormányzó, aki bejelentette, eddig mintegy nyolcan haltak meg a Kentuckyt sújtó áradásokban. Hozzátette, hogy a halottak között van egy anya is 7 éves gyerekével.
Mint mondta, az áldozatok többsége olyan utakon ragadt autójával, amelyeket elöntött a víz. Ezért felszólította az embereket, hogy lehetőleg ne keljenek útra.
Az ítéletidő következtében több mint ezer embert vittek biztonságba a mentőszolgálatok. Donald Trump amerikai elnök pedig az állam kezdeményezésére veszélyhelyzetet hirdetett Kentuckyban, ahol háztartások tízezrei maradtak áram-, illetve ivóvíz-szolgáltatás nélkül. A Nemzeti Gárdát is bevetették.
Az Atlanta Journal Constitution helyi hatóságokra hivatkozva egy további halálesetet jelentett Georgiából.
A szombat óta tartó, viharokkal kísért heves esőzések több amerikai államot is sújtanak, így Kentucky mellett Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Virginia és Nyugat-Virginia is érintett. Tennesseeben egy gát is átszakadt, ami a helyi hatóságok szerint akár életveszélyes helyzetet is teremthet, Virginiában pedig az utakat eltorlaszoló sárlavinák akadályozták a forgalmat.
