A China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) jelentése szerint egy 6,2-es erősségű földrengés történt december 18-án éjfél előtt egy perccel, epicentruma Cishishan Bao’an Donxiang és Salar autonóm megyében.
Míg a két állam határához közeli régióban több ezer ház tönkrement a földrengés következtében, megsérült a víz- és villanyhálózat, a közlekedési infrastruktúra és a kommunikációs hálózatok.
A földrengésben több mint 1000-en sérültek meg, Gansuban 288-an, Csinghajban pedig 117-en részesülnek még mindig kórházi kezelésben.
87 ezer embert evakuáltak biztonságos területekre, és 14 ezer előregyártott átmeneti ház létesül a térségben.
