A baleset helyszínén a hatóságok fémkapcsokat találtak a síneken, a vonat előtt amerikai lőszerszállító konvoj haladt volna.
A vonat kisiklott az Egyesült Államok hadseregének konvoja előtt Essen városa közelében, Németországban, január 12-én este, kb. 22:30-kor. A német rendőrség a szabotázs lehetőségét is vizsgálja – számol be róla a Bild.
A német szövetségi rendőrség adatai szerint a mozdonyból csak egy tengely siklott ki, személyi sérülés nem történt. Néhány órával a baleset előtt ugyanazon a szakaszon az amerikai hadsereg lőszert és katonai technikát szállító vonatának kellett volna áthaladnia.
A baleset helyszínén a nyomozók több fémkapcsot találtak a síneken.
Az utolsó vonat ezen a szakaszon problémamentesen áthaladt kb. 17:30-kor, majd mintegy 70 perccel később az amerikai hadsereg konvojának kellett volna haladnia a vonalon. Késés miatt a katonai konvojt másik vágányra irányították, és a veszélyes szakaszon végül egy szokásos tehervonat közlekedett – ez siklott ki.
A nyomozás vizsgálja, hogy a fémkapcsok maradványai esetleg az elmúlt építési munkákból származnak-e, vagy szándékosan helyezték el őket.

Fekete füstfelhők és lángok csaptak fel, miután egy benzolt szállító tehervonat kisiklott és kigyulladt a kelet-csehországi Hustopece nad Becvou közelében. Az eset következtében tizenöt veszélyes anyagot szállító tartálykocsi kapott lángra.
A vasúti szerencsétlenség a tűzoltóság legmagasabb készültségi fokozatát váltotta ki a térségben, ahol a lángok ellen több mint 150 tűzoltó küzdőtt, munkájukat pedig helikopter is segítette. A baleset során személyi sérülésről nem érkezett jelentés, ugyanakkor a tűzoltási műveletek a szakemberek szerint az egész hétvégén át tarthatnak.
A hatóságok arra kérték Hustopece nad Becvou csaknem 1800 lakosát, hogy tartsák zárva ablakaikat és ajtóikat, mivel a benzol egy illékony szerves vegyület, amely rákkeltő hatású lehet az embereknél, valamint akut egészségkárosodást is okozhat.
Az érintett vasútvonalat lezárták, több Szlovákia felé tartó Eurocity járatot töröltek, az utasoknak busszal kellett folytatniuk útjukat.
A benzol a vegyipar fontos alapanyaga, amelyet többek között festékek, műanyagok, műgyanták és oldószerek gyártásához használnak fel. Az anyag belélegzése és bőrrel való érintkezése súlyos egészségügyi kockázatokkal jár, valamint tudományosan bizonyított rákkeltő hatása van.
Nem ez az első ilyen jellegű baleset Csehországban, ugyanis 2017 januárjában Studenka településen egy tehervonat megrongálódott tartálykocsijából is benzol szivárgott, akkor azonban az anyag nem gyulladt meg.
