A helyenként havazással és rendkívüli erejű hófúvásokkal, máshol heves jégeső formájában érkezett kiadós csapadék annak tulajdonítható, hogy betört Németország fölé egy sarkvidéki eredetű viharfront, amely az ország középső részén találkozott egy délről érkezett fronttal.
A két front találkozásánál északról mínusz 12 Celsius-fokos, délről plusz 12 Celsius-fokos hőmérsékletű légtömegek csapódtak egymáshoz, és mivel a Franciaország déli részéről elindult front nemcsak meleg, hanem nagyon nedves levegőt szállított, az ütközőzónában rövid idő alatt jelentős mennyiségű hó, a térség déli peremén pedig a felszínre érkezve azonnal jéggé dermedő eső hullott.
A régió egy nagyjából 130 kilométer széles, a holland határtól a cseh határig húzódó szalagot képez. Felső, északi részét alig néhány óra alatt sokhelyütt 20-30 centiméter vastagságú hóréteg borította be. Alsó, déli részén jégpáncél keletkezett a legtöbb felületen, ami nemcsak csúszásveszélyt okozott, hanem leszakadással fenyegető súlyt helyezett a többi között elektromos távvezetékekre és fák ágaira.
Az utak számos településen nehezen járhatók, sok helyen az egy métert is meghaladó magasságú hótorlaszokat emelt az erős szél. Több településen korlátozták a közösségi közlekedést. A Deutsche Bahn (DB) vasúttársaság több tízezer munkatársát és valamennyi hótakarító és jégmentesítő járművét mozgósította, de így is több szakaszon törölni kellett távolsági és regionális járatokat.
A szövetségi meteorológiai szolgálat (DWD) előrejelzése szerint a havazás legalább hétfőig tarthat, enyhülés legkorábban a hét közepétől várható.
