A sajtóhoz eljuttatott felvételeken látszik, hogy a gép egyik oldalán egy hatalmas lyuk tátong, ahol a vészkijáratként is működő ablaknak kéne lennie, alig pár centire az ott ülő utasoktól. A beszámolók szerint pont nem ült senki azon a helyen, amelyik a legközelebb volt a kiszakadt ablakhoz. A kérdéses ablakrész a gép hátsó harmadánál, a hajtómű és a szárny mögött szakadt ki.
A BBC azt írja, hogy a Boeing 737 Max közismerten egy probléma repülőgéptípus, 2019-ben átmenetileg az összeset forgalmon kívül helyezték, miután kettő is lezuhant. Ezután az összeset átalakították. A kiszakadt elem a BBC szerint valószínűleg egy vészkijáratként is használható része volt a gépnek. Decemberben egyébként az amerikai légihatóság elrendelte az összes ilyen típusú gép vizsgálatát más technikai probléma miatt is.
