A Peru partvidékét beszennyező olaj miatt menti egy limai állatkert a térségben élő veszélyeztetett tengeri madarakat.
A mintegy 6000 hordónyi nyersolaj egy olajszállító hajóról került az óceánba.
Az állatmentők az elmúlt héten több mint 40 madarat, köztük veszélyeztetett Humboldt-pingvineket szállítottak a Las Leyendas állatkertbe, ahol állatorvosok gondoskodnak felépülésükről.
Liseth Bermúdez, az állatkert biológusa azonban hangsúlyozta, hogy ilyen mértékű olajszennyezéssel Peruban eddig nem találkoztak, és az érintett madarak túlélési esélyei korlátozottak.
Guillermo Ramos, a perui Erdészeti és Vadvédelmi Szolgálat munkatársa hozzátette: ha az olajszennyezést nem állítják meg hamarosan, más madarak és tengeri fajok is eltűnhetnek.
Hozzátette: Peruban mintegy 150 madárfaj táplálkozása és szaporodása függ a tengertől.
A tongai vulkánkitörés miatti erős hullámzás okozta a balesetet
A Limától északra fekvő perui partvidéket beszennyező olaj a kirakodáskor ömlött az óceánba egy tartályhajóról a La Pampilla finomítónál.
A finomító szerint a január 15-én bekövetkezett balesetet a tongai vulkánkitörést követő heves hullámzás okozta.
Az olasz zászló alatt közlekedő Mare Doricum nevű tartályhajó 965 ezer hordó nyersolajjal volt megrakva.
A perui kormány szombaton környezetvédelmi vészhelyzetet jelentett be, melynek nyomán elkezdik a helyreállítási és tisztítási munkálatokat a katasztrófa következményeinek enyhítése érdekében. A kormány a tankhajó spanyol tulajdonosától, a Repsol olajipari vállalattól kér kártérítést.
