A megfertőződött ember Nigériából érkezett Dallasba repülővel július 9-én, majd négy nappal később maga ment be a kórházba, mert nem érezte jól magát. Miután a vizsgálatok megerősítették, hogy majomhimlős, a beteget elszeparálták, de az állapota stabil. A hatóságok folyamatosan monitorozzák azokat az embereket is, akik egy gépen utaztak a fertőzöttel, de kicsi az esélye, hogy bárki is elkapta a kórt, mert a koronavírus miatt mindenkin maszk volt.
A majomhimlő leginkább a levegő útján terjed, de testnedvekkel is átadható. Az viszont nem fertőz, akinek nincsenek tünetei. Az első tünetek leginkább egy sima influenzára hasonlítanak: láz, fejfájás, izomfájdalom, kimerültség és duzzadt nyirokcsomók. Az első tünetek megjelenése után néhány nappal azonban kiütések jelennek meg az arcon, majd a test többi részén. A betegség lefolyása nagyjából 2-4 hét. Afrikában a betegség tíz százalékban halálos kimenetelű, és főleg az immunhiányos emberekre jelent veszélyt.
A majomhimlőt 1958-ben fedezeték fel egy dán laboratóriumban. Az első esetet Kongóban regisztrálták, ahol évente nagyjából 1000 ember fertőződik meg. Nigériában 2017-ben jelent meg.
